Miley’s POV
The sound of laughter from downstairs fills me with dread. What am I going to do? I've never had a boy over at my house before. Oh God, I think I'm going to have a heart attack.
Taking a deep breath, I head downstairs. Ari and David are already in the living room.
“There you are! Let’s play video games,” David says, holding up the game controller.
“I’ll go start on the pasta. You two have fun,” I say, trying to hide my nervousness.
“I’m so going to kick your ass,” David laughs, nudging Ari.
“In your dreams,” Ari replies, grabbing the controller.
Once they’re fully engrossed in the game, I sneak into the kitchen. “Thank God for that,” I mutter with a sigh. Because of David, I’m stuck cooking—something I hadn't planned on doing. My original plan was to study and work on my novel. At least I have a book here to keep me company.
Time flies when you're lost in a good book, so much so that I don’t notice when Ari suddenly appears in front of me.
“Earth to Miley,” Ari says, waving his hand in front of my face. Crap!
“Hey, aren’t you supposed to be gaming?” I ask, trying to act cool.
“I was, but the food was burning, so I came to check on you.”
“Burning? What are you talking about?” I glance over at the stove, and to my horror, the pot is smoking. “Oh no!” I rush over to lift the pot, but it’s scalding hot. The pain shoots through my hand, and I drop it.
Ari quickly turns off the gas and pulls me toward the sink, running cold water over my hand.
“What were you thinking?” he scolds gently.
“I didn’t know it was that hot,” I mumble, feeling embarrassed.
“Do you have a first aid kit?” he asks.
“Yeah, it’s in the cupboard over there.” I point it out, and Ari retrieves it.
“Got it,” he says, guiding me to the dining table. I sit down while he pulls out some ointment from the kit. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but it feels soothing.
“Who tries to pick up a hot pot with bare hands?” he teases, shaking his head.
“I didn’t realize it was burning,” I reply defensively.
“Right, because you were too busy reading instead of watching the pasta,” he says, sounding a bit annoyed.
“I’m sorry,” I say, bowing my head in shame. He sighs and gently lifts my chin with his hand.
“Hey, it was just an accident. Be careful next time,” he says with a smile. God, he’s so charming. I could stare at him forever. Blushing, I look away.
“I’m home!” my mom announces as she walks in. “Traffic was terrible.”
“Hey, Mrs. Morales,” David says, still glued to the TV.
“Hi, David.”
“Hello, Mrs. Morales,” Ari adds, setting the first aid kit on the table.
“Hi, Mom,” I say.
“Hey, chica. Hey, Ari. Oh my God, what burnt?” my mom asks, noticing the mess in the kitchen.
“Miley made burnt pasta,” David chimes in.
“By accident!” I protest.
“And she burnt her hand,” my mom adds.
“What?” She rushes over to check on me.
