I quickly came to my senses and pulled away. He gently smiled at me as I watched him trying to read his expression. "Lando.." I muttered as the song finished. "It's alright Muffin you don't have to say anything now" he smiled reassuring me. Was this a confession?
We made our way back from the dance floor. Nobody had seen our small interaction. Or at least I thought. Charles' death stared me scowling. There was a vein pulsating on his neck as he grew more agitated by the second. I turned away feeling intimidated by his strong presence. What I hadn't initially intended was that someone else may have seen, but who?
Soon after, I became engaged in a conversation with Daniel about the best cities in Australia. We were debating where we should stay, as I previously had agreed to stay with him.
Suddenly, I heard a high pitched giggle, which if I'm being honest hurt my ears. I physically winced at Daniel as he grimaced at me.
Then, I was able to put a face to the voice. We saw two bleach blondes giggling as they stumbled up towards us. They made their way past us and collapsed either side of Charles'. They started to speak to him as he wrapped his arms around both of them.
I gave Daniel a what the fuck look and he quickly explained; " they're Charles' company." He air quoted the company part, which made me shiver in disgust.
Daniel and I continued our conversation, yet I couldn't help but feel distracted. I started to feel dizzy, as the alcohol started to get to me. Daniel placed his arm on my shoulder grabbing my attention back towards him. "Are you alright? Do you want me to take you back to your hotel?" He asked sincerely. I wanted to say, yet something was playing in my head.
Nothing like this has ever happened before. Had I drank too much? I stumbled up telling Daniel I was going to the toilet and I'd be back soon. I tumbled towards the bathroom, but before I could get there a hand reached out and pulled me towards the direction the hand had sprung out from. I fell towards the retracting hand. I toppled outside. I could make out that we were out of the back of the club.
I tried to steady myself, as I looked up to meet the impenetrable eyes of Oscar. "Oscar" I attempted to straighten my back and look him in the eye.
"You know. You've overstepped this time." He hissed at me pushing the back into the wall. I winced.
"You came here with Carlos. Let's ignore how much older he is. Then you kiss Lando! He's my fucking teammate. Do you know how much he talks about you? It's driving me crazy. You're probably using him! You're such a slut. What are you trying to make your way through the grid?" He growled at me. I could barely take in what he was saying as my head started to bang. "Say something!" He shouted. I tried to back away from him, but I was already against the wall. "Oscar my head" I groaned, clenching my head, which was throbbing immensely.
He ignored me. " You're just going to leave Lando like you left me. You're so selfish. Why did you have to come back to the paddock the season I joined?!" I couldn't form words. My head hurt so much. I let my back slide down the dirty wall so I sat on the floor.
"What's going on here?" Another deep masculine voice seeped in through the surrounding darkness. I squinted up to see Charles approaching carelessly. I wrapped my legs up, as I held my head. I don't understand how I hurt it in the first place.
"Stay out of it." Oscar retaliated. As he stood in front of me blocking me from Charles' view.
"You're so pathetic. I crashed you out on track and made you promise to leave her alone? But you still won't get it through that thick skull of yours to do so?" He stepped forward shoving Oscar to the side making Oscar hit the wall with force.
I could hear Oscar's small yelp in pain and surprise. That's when I knew I had to step up. I didn't need to be protected. I was my own person. I would not let anybody take away from me. I was going to fight my own battles. Myself.
