So this story takes place last winter break. It's kind of a messed up one too and I don't even know why I'm telling this story.
*Scene - Two Days Before Christmas*
I was sitting on my bed comfortably reading a book when my mom knocked on the door and entered. I continued to read until she began to speak. Once she did I knew she had some exciting news, or just maybe exciting to her.
"Cameron honey, listen! I was just talking to Ben's mom and I invited her over for Christmas dinner! Doesn't that sound like fun? Just us, Ben and his mom and dad!" She explained in her most uplifting voice.
"Oh okay! That sounds good." I then when back to reading. I know that might have seemed rude but in my defense it was a really good book! You know that feeling when you can't put a book down? Well, that was my situation.
"Oh. I thought you would be more excited..." My mom murmured.
I lifted my eyes from the book for a couple of seconds and then stared back at it. "Mom, I am, it's just that I'm busy right now."
She then sat down on my bed next to where I laid and she stroked my arm. Again, I didn't set one eye off of the book. Staring at me intensely, my mom opened her mouth with importance but never spoke. I eventually glanced at her with a look as if I were to ask, "what's wrong?" My mom then began to say what was on her mind.
"Honey? I think it's time that we have a little chat."
"Oh mom! Not now! I took eighth grade health you know!" I argued.
She set soft eyes on me and shook her head no. "Cameron, not that. I want to ask you a personal question. I have always wondered about this ever since you started middle school. You and Ben are great friends and that's only who you both spend your friendships with, each other. Are you beginning to develop feelings for Ben?"
I perched myself up on my bed and sat silent. It took me awhile until I could spit the words out. "Um, I guess so..."
"I thought so. No sexual energy around each other you hear me?" She sounded stern almost angry, then she began to joke. I laughed along and she eventually left the room. I really didn't know what that was about but my mom can be a little wacky at times.
Fast forward to Christmas Day where the actual story begins...
*Scene - Christmas Day*
I woke up earlier than usual. With it being about 5:30 a.m. I decided to start my day by taking a quick shower and getting ready because I knew there was no going back to sleep. I had taken a glance down the stairs and the Christmas tree was lit and gifts sat beneath it. Usually my family opens presents after dinner all together and in this case, including opening gifts with Ben's family.
SPOLER ALERT/ Fact: I know Santa is a childhood myth.
While showering I noticed that I was taking much importance to my appearance. Was this because it was a special holiday or because Ben and his family was coming over for dinner? Probably both.
After I was freshened up, I skipped down stairs to greet my parents for breakfast.
"Merry Christmas!" I yelled as I spotted my mom taking a sip other coffee and my dad taking a big bite into his buttered bagel.
"Merry Christmas Sweetheart!" My parents said simultaneously.
I took the seat across from my dad and grabbed a bagel from the bag. I began to butter my bagel and silence filled the room. I felt like starting conversation but I didn't know what to talk about. Soon I heard my dad start to say something.
