The hard stone of the basement floor pressed against my back and the chill seeped through my clothes. I had no way to tell how long I had been down here, the eternal darkness gave no indication as to the time. The only thing that broke the monotony of the days was when he came, and that I dreaded.

The door at the top of the stairs clicked as it was unlocked, the small sound seeming huge in the deathly silence. The sliver of yellowish light that snuck through the doorway burned my eyes but I knew better than to look away. You never turn your back on danger.

His heavy footsteps crept gradually closer until he loomed over where I was huddled on the floor.

"Having fun Amaryllis?" He asked with a sharp-toothed smile, his raspy voice sending shivers of terror down my spine.

I knew better than to reply, begging and crying would do nothing but make him angry and when he was angry he took it out on me. I was his toy, his punching bag. I had no family or anyone who cared about me so I was fully under his power. He could do whatever he liked to me, beat me, starve me, lock me in the cellar. I was powerless, even my fighting skills were no use to me, he was too strong.

"No answer for me? How rude, perhaps another day down here would do you good."

He sent a painful kick to my already bruised ribs and I was too busy gasping for breath to get to the door before he slammed it shut, cutting me off from the outside world and leaving me alone again. Alone with my thoughts and the rats.
