Uzi ran.
She didn't know how long she ran after her head stopped pounding and her eyes stopped flickering.
Finally, she stopped, ready to collapse, in a snowy forest, far from the worker's bunker. She leaned against a large sign, panting.
A few moments later she had regained some of her composure, leaning away from the sign to read it.
Camp 97.8
Est. 3002
The name was familiar, but Uzi couldn't quite put her finger on it. She stumbled past the sign and deeper into unfamiliar territory.
Eventually, she came to a large cabin protruding from the ground like a pyramid. Bone-weary and very much wanting to die, Uzi stumbled up the stairs and into the darkness within.
She glanced around at the interior, taking in the messy room with its shredded couches and scattered papers. Letting out a sigh that could've knocked over one of the massive buildings outside of the worker's bunker, she flopped onto one of the couches. She rubbed her visor, a million questions running through her mind.
"What was... that?" she murmured, squeezing her eyes shut and leaning back on the couch.
"A curse."
Uzi stood up quickly. "Who's there?" She demanded, scanning the room.
"Over here, sweetheart," Uzi turned in the direction of the voice. It seemed to be coming from something under a large greyish tarp. She pulled it off, revealing a mirror.
"Who are you?" She asked, sure it was the mirror she was talking to, based on the other mirror mishaps she'd had.
"A friend. Or, at least, I'd like to be." Uzi propped up the mirror.
"That's... not helpful. Do you have a name?" Uzi asked. She could practically hear it thinking.
"I can't tell you, not right now, anyways. But what you do need to know is that you're in danger."Uzi raised an eyebrow. "No, danger, really? It's not like I've had multiple threats to my life in the past week." She said, mildly annoyed. "Stop talking like a young adult novel."
The voice scoffed, then muttered something under its breath jovially. "Alright, I'll quit talking in riddles. That symbol that's been appearing on your visor? I know what is is. It's the glyph of something called the AbsoluteSolver."
"Yeah, okay, but what does it do?" Uzi asked, getting impatient. She wanted answers, but she wanted to sleep more than anything right now. Getting a lecture from a mirror was low on her priority list right now.
"Are you going to tell me something useful or can I go lie down?" Uzi asked tiredly.
"Oh, by all means, lie down, ignore your coming doom." It snapped. Uzi rolled her eyes.
"Okay, fine. Enlighten me, then."
"I can't tell you everything because I don't know everything. But I will tell you what I do know: the Solver is an artificial intelligence, an entity, if you will, with a mind and will of its own. It isn't just a program, though it did start as one. The humans engineered it as a way to give the worker drones more of a personality, if you will, giving them a sentience rather than just making them mindless slaves. Why, I haven't the foggiest. Human hubris, perhaps? Regardless of the reason for which it was created, it deviated from its programming, granting matter-manipulating powers and mutilating any drone that was unfortunate enough to have its program within it.
"You, my dear, are one of those drones.""What do you mean?" Uzi asked, guarded. "How? The humans were all dead by the time I was manufactured."
"They weren't when your parents were." it replied, ominously.
"Are you saying that one of my parents had this.. this Solver?" She asked, her mind whirling. It must have been my mom, I've seen her with the symbol before. It couldn't be dad, could it? Maybe it was both of them? How do robot genetics work?
"That's exactly what I'm saying. And you must learn to control it before it learns to control you."
A chill crawled down Uzi's spine."Well, how do I do that?" she asked, trying to maintain an air of bravado.
"You need to-" The mirror was cut off by a fit of coughing. Uzi couldn't stop. It felt like her insides were trying to fling themselves out via her coughing.
Her head started pounding, her vision went blurry. She could hear the mirror shouting something at her but she couldn't hear it over the ringing in her ears. Before everything went dark, she caught a glance of herself in the mirror that desperately screamed at her.
Her eyes were gone, replaced by the solver's symbol. Fleshy wings sprouted from her back and a tail with jagged teeth and innumerable eyes glared at her. Terror overwhelmed her and she stumbled back as her vision cut out again. Then everything went black.
[Ooh, who could the mirror be?? Sorry, I just can't resist adding mirror characters!!
Guess who's back!!!
Yep, I managed to somewhat get my poop in a group and throw together something resembling words!
I know I said I would try to upload a chapter during Christmas break, but then my entire family (of 9, including me) got the stomach bug from my relatives. Thanks, really appreciate it.
Anyway, we're mostly better now, and here are the results! I'm not gonna make any promises but it was one of my New Year's resolutions to write more rather than spend my time on Pinterest. So maybe I'll be able to get a chapter out every one or two weeks?
In other news, I've picked up a new obsession! There's a line from this chapter that was taken directly from the show so tell me if you catch it >:3 It's a villain's line, so there's you're only hint.
God bless,
Holly]
