It didn't necessarily have to be sexual, right? They rekindled an old flame, but it didn't mean that something was going to come out of it. It could just be a way to be more open and honest with each other, grow closer again, strengthen their friendship. At least that was what Stevie was telling herself from the moment she woke up the following morning.
Callie left before noon, so Stevie had no one to distract her. She tried writing, she played for a bit, but she couldn't fully concentrate. There was just the one thought on her mind - Lindsey was coming to see her, around 8, he informed her. She expected him earlier, guessing that lying to your spouse about your whereabouts would be easier during daytime. What did he tell her, Stevie wondered, soaking in a bubble bath, hoping it would help calm her down.
It was past 7 pm already. What should she wear? A cold shoulder top and a pair of leggings didn't feel right. Opening the door in a nightgown or less? She could potentially embarrass herself if he wasn't coming for that. What about makeup? Her hair?
Lindsey pulled into the driveway a few minutes before 9. The first thing he planned on doing was apologizing for being late. The argument with his wife took longer than he'd hoped. At this point, he didn't care anymore.
Stevie heard the doorbell and froze for a second. She took a deep breath and went to answer the door. Whatever happens, it was meant to happen.
"I'm sorr- oh, wow..." Lindsey's mouth agape as he shamelessly stared at her.
"Too much?" Stevie asked, unsure yet if she should feel embarrassed, like she feared she would be, with her choice or not.
"Too much." Lindsey nodded and rushed to add before she had the chance to misunderstand. "You're wearing too much." He said and stepped over the threshold, when she opened the door wider.
Stevie sighed, relieved, he got her worried for a second. She decided that they both knew exactly why she'd invited him, so why pretend?
"Can I get you-"
That was as much as Stevie managed to get out before Lindsey's arm slid around her waist and he pushed her up against the nearest wall. His fingers worked fast to untie the knot she'd made out of the sash of her floor length red silk robe, revealing a matching nightie underneath. He broke the kiss and his lips moved lower, leaving a trail of kisses down her throat.
"Hey. Hey..." Stevie brought her hands up, she cradled his face and lifted his head up from her chest. "Are you okay?"
"I really don't wanna talk about it." Lindsey replied, sliding his fingers in her natural curls to pull her in for a kiss.
She didn't resist, she kissed him back, his hands on her body seemingly everywhere at once. But... Stevie slowed them down again. "I'm not going to kick you out if you tell me what happened." She promised, she had a feeling that something went really wrong at home.
Lindsey exhaled heavily, taking a small step back. "I don't want to ruin the night." He shrugged weakly then looked down at the feeling of her lacing their fingers together.
"Come on, let's get you a drink." Stevie said, leading the way to her liquor cabinet.
Lindsey slumped down on the couch, while Stevie picked for both of them and poured a shot of whiskey for each. He followed her with his eyes as she was approaching him, he took one of the glasses from her, when she held it out for him.
"It's really hard to focus on anything else, when all I really want is to get you naked and do unspeakable things to you." Lindsey reached for her hand and pulled her closer. "You look incredible." He said, eyes locked. His then lowered slightly and for a short moment, he let himself imagine her cherry red lips wrapped around-
"Drink your shot." Stevie ordered and he did. "Another one?"
Lindsey thought about it for a minute. He wanted to stay, it didn't seem like she was planning on pushing him out the door either. He nodded his head.
"Well?" Stevie sat down beside him after she took the empty shot glass and put it away once he'd emptied it for the second time.
"I tried. I really did." Lindsey emphasized, hand on his heart. "We had a fight that morning." She knew, what he meant. "She had every right to be mad and I did feel like an asshole. I promised her that it would never happen again, that I'll work on being a better husband to her. That's why I didn't call or anything." He gave her an apologetic look. "I thought, I was doing what I was supposed to do, but it's not good enough. We barely talked for a week. I took her out to dinner last night, bought a very expensive gift and she just..." Lindsey shrugged, running a hand through his hair. "We started arguing at the restaurant." He sighed. "It continued in the car and at home."
Stevie wanted to wait until she heard the full story, but she felt bad for him. Lindsey opened his arm, when she scooted over closer to him. She lay her head on his shoulder, he pressed a kiss to her hair.
"I fell asleep in my studio, thinking about seeing you." Lindsey admitted, lowering his arm to her waist.
"She didn't see those texts, did she?" Stevie asked, shifting a little to hug him around the middle. She turned slightly more and lifted her leg up to rest on his, his hand naturally fell on her thigh.
"No." Lindsey shook his head. "Apparently, there are plenty of other things to argue about. Sleeping in the studio was also terribly wrong of me." He rolled his eyes. "I swear, the minute I had stepped into the house, she was screaming at me."
"And you leaving the house late in the evening?" Stevie looked up, he looked down at her. "Surely, that's not going to help the situation. What did you say?"
"I didn't say anything." Lindsey shrugged. "I just left."
"I'm sorry."
Lindsey frowned, confused. "None of this is your fault."
"Well-"
"It isn't." Lindsey repeated. "I chose to stay that night, I chose to be here with you now."
"Us being together like this..." Not an inch separating their bodies, she meant. "This is a potential disaster waiting to happen as well."
Stevie was surprised to hear him laugh. "True, but there's no other place I'd rather be." Lindsey said, gently grasping her chin with his fingers so she didn't look away. "I don't know why this is happening..." He shook his head slightly. "Why now." He added. "All I know is that I want it. I want you."
