A door opened into a beautiful, terraced house. "Hi mum!"

"Colin" the lady ran over to embrace her son.

"Did you go and see that lady at the hospital? How is she? There was so much blood!"

"She has a concussion; she can't remember anything"

"She can't remember the accident" she had the most adorable concerned horizontal frown line when she was worried. Even if she didn't even ask the question first, Colin always knew when his mother was feeling anxious. As a child he would wind her up, just to read her facial expression to see if he had gotten away with 'murder' he used to say to himself, but usually it was food related.

"No. Mum she's got amnesia. Doesn't even know her name"

"Oh my god. Poor girl. Do they think she is going to be okay?" Maggie's face looked pale with worry.

"I think they just need a family member to take her home... but with no name?"

"Do you think she could stay here with me; do you think that would be allowed?"

"I can certainly ask, mum. What a nice thought" he kissed his mum on the forehead, trying to almost fade away her frown line "She asked how you were doing"

"Really? She sounds like a remarkable and caring young lady"

"Yeah, and surprising"

"Surprising" she gave her son a quizzical look "Meaning?"

He shrugged and murmured "Nothing"

Mags definitely knew what nothing meant, he used to use it a lot when he was a child when he didn't want to explain further, she thought, give him a little push and hope the words would flow.

"Col?"

He spoke quietly "She kissed me"

"Sorry Col, you need to speak up" tapping her ear "I didn't get that" her sarcastic tone not going amiss in Col's expression.

He said loudly "She kissed me!"

"Well," she smiled to herself "What an eventful morning you had"

"She thought I was her husband" his mum gestured him to 'go on' "She overheard some nurses talking about finding her husband, then I walked in"

"Ah, I see" she gave him a sideways look "Did you" hands gesturing a shrug "Kiss her back?" she could already see her sons frustration, and found it wonderfully thrilling to push his buttons, when needed.

"Mum!" the wine in his voice made her chuckle. He had become a teenager all over again.

"Oh, for goodness' sake, you obviously want to talk about it, or you wouldn't have mentioned it"

"Mum, do you have to go on about it" Colin slouched on a chair. He then sat silent and frustrated for five minutes before blurting out "I did" his mum nearly dropped the teapot with the outburst.

"Are you going back to the hospital?" His mum passed Colin a cup of tea. Colin looked up at her sweetly "Can I get something a little stronger?"

Her other hand was behind her back, she pulled around a whisky already poured. A mother's love is like no other he thought to himself. His mum always knew when he was feeling stressed and confused. He appreciated that "Thanks mum"

"I don't know if I should go back. She's married"

"You don't know that. The nurses might have got something wrong." his mum optimism was catching. Maybe she was right. She put her hand on Colin's "I haven't seen you like this in a long time" he smiled at her "What do you mean?"
