Jane got up early to go for a walk. The day was beautiful. The sun shone down and warmed her arms. If this was to be her last day on earth. At least it would be a good one.
She stepped into the park, a slight icy feel from the mildew on the grass. A robin perched on a branch.
Looked at her, she slowly reached for it. What a thing to be out here. With its beautiful plumage. Maybe it was an omen that everything would be okay.
Pain. blood started pouring from her mouth. She spun around. It had her around her neck squeezing before letting its teeth tear into her shoulder.
Jane gasped, attempting to take the creature of her. It snarled back, almost to mock her efforts. Is this it. Is this the end.
As it sunk its teeth into her neck. She felt her strength give out. Jane thought to herself. Maybe life would be easier if she would just die. She fancied a bit of peace and quiet.
Maybe it was finally her time, she welcomed death with open arms.
Out of nowhere a spear sliced through the creature's brain. Liquid trickled over her face as Colin knife cut the teeth out of the beast, pulling them from her throat. Her agony burned into a roar as the fangs were released and thrown to the ground, with a clatter.
The body of the beast slumped on the ground. Its grotesque features etched on her mind. It's body still twitching as the nervous system was slowly giving out.
She looked up at Colin. His eyes burning with a strength she had never seen before. He saved her.
Then the sarcastic part of her brain spoke for her "Well, I'm never going to hear the end of this now" Colin's face still stern, pulled her to her feet. Took his jacket off to wipe her face. "Are you okay?" his voice was soft, she started to feel her head swirl.
"How did you know I was here?" she sounded frustrated with him, for putting himself in danger. Really though she was a bit relieved.
"I noticed you were acting a bit weird, so I followed you"
Her words were hushed "I will live to fight another day" she felt more blood running down her shoulder. The coat pressed tight on the wound as he called for an ambulance.
St Faiths Hospital
The light was buzzing in the overly brightly lit hospital room, where Jane lay uncomfortably on her side. Bumpy and just out of surgery. A handsome man was sitting to the right of her on a chair "How are you feeling today?" she looked at him quizzically "Are you the doctor?"
Colin's face dropped.
She could see his brain ticking away, watching his eyes roll back at forth like he was watching a pendulum swing.
Out of the corner of his eyes her expression had changed like she was trying to hold in a chuckle, but still attempting to keep her composure. Failing.
He took a deep breath, trying to somehow suck in the teardrop that looked as though it would fall any second. He gave a tight smile, and murmured to himself "Bitch"
Jane attempted sitting up, but the pain hit her like a flash, and she recoiled back down. She gave a forced optimistic smile "My mind is quiet"
His brows shot up "Does that mean it's over"
"Time will tell" she shrugged off
They both stayed in silence. Truth be known, neither of them knew it would ever be over, as such. Colin decided he would be optimistic in front of her though.
Hospital Laboratory, 2am Monday
A young girl's hand reached for a blood sample 'Jane Doe' was written on the label. She swiftly replaced it with another sample and walked away.
Jane's Hospital Room
"So, I don't seem to be healing as fast. I think maybe the creatures were linked somehow to me. Now that they are gone." she shrugged "I feel normal"
The corner of his lip rose to a smirk "Fancy an arm wrestle then" his voice rising slightly "To be sure?"
"Isn't that a second date. Kind of thing?"
The question replied with a small smile "Are you asking me out, Jane Doe?"
"Jane Doe?"
"That's the name I gave the hospital. I didn't know if you wanted to keep your identity a secret. Plus I recon you somehow prefer it to Misha, considering you haven't ever corrected me when I called you Jane"
"Smart thinking, Batman"
"So, what name would you prefer"
"I think I like Jane"
He smiled "Good"
"Its time we lay Misha, and her shitty memories to rest, dont you think. Misha was sad, treated like nothing but a fighter and a catalyst. Jane on the other hand. Is tough, has a great boyfriend.. well some of the time, and she is cared for"
"Oi!, what do you mean some of the time"
She glared at him, like he was a naughty school boy"
"Yes Miss" he chuckled to himself
She pulled her cover up, tightening around her sides "Can you do me a favour?"
"Sure. Anything" he shrugged out
"Can you look in my wound and see if it looks. You know. Normal"
"What do you mean?"
"You know what I mean."
He gingerly looked up to her "It looks okay, but then again, they have stitched you up nicely"
"When we get out of here, I need you to cut the stitches out and take me to another hospital" Colin's eyes had a glimpse of terror hidden behind them. Her last word broke his resolve "Please"
Her pleading made him more concerned, but he agreed non the less. Even if it was over, Jane still felt she couldn't trust anyone. Better safe than sorry, she thought to herself.
