"-na. Jenna. Jenna!" I look up to see my best friend, Elijah, staring at me in frustrated concern.

"I'm sorry," I apologize quickly. "What's up?"

Elijah shakes his head with a sigh before taking a bite out of his reuben sandwich. I will never understand how he could like that stuff.

Through a mouthful, he says, "I was thinking that we should go to the mall this weekend. I think they're having a sale on those heels you really like. Plus, I think Vincent is going to be working."

Vincent is one of the guys that works in the food court at the mall. Elijah always gets dreamy eyed and red cheeked when he sees him.

He ends up stuttering up a storm, and I have to step in to order for us. It usually ends with me dragging him away by the hand while he ogles the "heartthrob" working the register.

I nod absentmindedly, only half listening to Elijah, as my eyes scan the room for the brunette beauty that I was distracted by earlier. She had burnt almond skin, her hair lazily hanging around her face. Her hands flew around the air as she talked with Kai, the captain of the football team.

Kai was a stereotypical jock picked from movies. He had a strong build, a buzzcut of dirty blond hair, and one dimple that showed when he smiled. He was every girl's dream. Well, most of them at least. As my boyfriend, we were shoo-ins for prom king and queen. The perfect couple.

He laughs at something that Kamryn says, giving a playful shove, while he grins widely. I feel disgusted that he's not only touching her, but touching another girl in that manner, in public, in front of me. He probably doesn't even notice me yet. Together, they grab their lunch trays and start walking in the direction of our usual table.

Kai looks up and sees me. He doesn't seem to feel any shame that he was acting so close to another girl in public. After all, "she's basically one of the guys" as he liked to put it. As far as I was concerned, she was nowhere near one of the guys.

I was "lucky" enough to call Kai mine. I suppose one could say that he was my "Gaston." Perfect, dreamy, and all that is man. Foolish, selfish, and self-absorbed. I rolled my eyes inwardly before giving him my picture perfect practiced smile.

"Hey, Jenna girl," Kai says with a tilted smile as he slams his tray down, his body following quickly after, and his arm landing heavily over my shoulders.

"Hey, Kai," I maintain the practiced smile despite wanting to shove his arm off. He has always had this way of pushing himself on me. He never considered how I would feel about anything that he does. Maybe because he's so used to every other girl being push-overs for him to use as a mat.

I say nothing to Kamryn as she sits across from me. Her legs are almost touching mine under the table, but her torso is turned towards Kai as they continue with their conversation. I turn my head down and away from both of them to hide my feelings.

Elijah nudges my foot under the table. I look up at him to see him subtly indicate with a slight jerk of his head that we should get out of here.

"Oh, no! Elijah!" I feign worry and panic. "I totally forgot that we have that project we need to finish for Ms. Parker!" I let my eyes widen as I try to keep my expression innocently concerned.

I look at Kamryn; she's already eyeing me. I guess that's to be expected due to my sudden outburst about a school project. She has the same class as Elijah and I, and she probably knows that there is no project. She keeps silent.

I turn my gaze to Kai. "I'm sorry. I really have to do this," I mumble out as I stand and grab my things. I quickly go to dispose of my lunch rubbish with Elijah right on my heels.
