Camryn Quinn is finally getting what she wants...sort of. Moving into a dorm and away from her not so supportive father is a good first step, but like everything with him, it comes with strings. She must attend the college of his choosing for at lea...

Camryn is only slightly hesitant to walk through the door I'm holding open. The bouncer just inside barely glances at our ID's before marking the back of Camryn's hands with two black X's and then holding open a second set of doors.
Her body grows rigid as soon as she crosses the threshold. The glass panels do a good job at filtering out noise, but there is no escaping the roaring of other college students from here. I watch as Camryn rocks back and forth on the soles of her converse, and I'm just waiting for her to turn right back around and forget our agreement altogether.
She wouldn't be her if she didn't stop to analyze the situation. I expected this from her. I know she's looking for a way to take back control.
It's why I was fully prepared to start this little experiment next week. I thought for sure she would need at least a few days to consider and write out a formal contract if she even agreed at all.
I may have been shitting myself in her dorm. Not because I was worried about her agreeing, but because I knew she would want to know what's in it for me. That's the part that I had actually rehearsed before showing up at her door. After learning the whole truth and history behind her relationship with her family, and why exactly Cal offered to pay me to be her friend I couldn't just do nothing. I need his money just as badly as I need to help Camryn get away from her family.
Her situation is just the aftermath of shitty event after shitty event. I can completely see her side of it. And for once, she deserves to feel supported. Seen.
If she knew the truth...If she knew their doubts about her are still there it would crush her.
Just like if she knew the truth about my role in it all, but without her brother's money I could very well be in the same situation months or years from now. My mom's body is responding to the chemo drugs. She's actually getting better. The doctors have hope.
The least I can do is help Camryn reach her goals, too. If it means that I let her believe I need help keeping on the straight and narrow, so be it. Coach Allinder has been following me to class and tutoring. Maybe one more person holding me accountable will be a good thing.
It would make my mom happy if I actually tried in school too since she never had the chance at a typical college experience.
And it's only for a few more months. My original plan was to take Cal's help until the end of the season. At the end of the season Camryn can also apply to transfer to whatever school she wants.
It's just a few more months. And then I'll focus on preparing for the draft and finding another way to make money, and Camryn will be ready to apply to transfer to wherever she wants to go next.
A few more months until we're both free.
I can fake it for a few more months.
I nudged her with a shoulder, "You're blocking the door, Quinn."
