When Sapphire had took off to the forest, she saw different colors instead of just white, blue, and gray. It was like colors exploding from the trees. Sapphire had never been outside of her home and she always wondered why Jellyfish and Tentacle never let the dragonets out. She landed due to exhaustion and laid by a tree. She stared at the green, brown, pink, yellow, orange, and more colors. Why hadn't Jellyfish and Tentacle let me out? They must be hiding something, Sapphire thought. She took out a scroll from her pouch and opened it.
"I hope I know how to read these words," Sapphire said out loud. "War has been coming across the two tribes, the SeaWings and the—" she paused struggling to read the other word. "NightWings? Wait, is this why they never let me read this scroll? Why are the two tribes in war? Is that why I never hatched at the Kingdom of Sea? Do they not want me to know about this war? If we're in war, why aren't we fighting back? Because we're dragonets? I can take care of myself, I need to read more." She started to ask herself many questions. She finally gave up on reading the scroll from struggling on too many words.
She stared in the the dark sky above her. The only light came from the two full moons and the stars. She pointed to a star and said, "North Star. That can help me with directions! Did I bring my star scroll with me?" She began digging into her pouch looking for her scroll and pulled it out. She opened it slowly and carefully hoping she wouldn't rip it since the scroll was over six years old.
She heard something crawling in the bushes and decided to check it out. A red-orange cobra leaped out at her face and snapped at her scales. Its fangs dug deep into her scales. Her scales was stinging with pain and felt like she was being electrocuted by electric eels. The cobra's deep midnight black eyes stared into hers. She roared with pain. Sapphire fell over on her back and the cobra let go of her. Blood spilled down her scales as she yelped for help. The cobra slithered towards her again, aiming for her wing. Overhead, she could hear wings beats.
A black dragon leaped out from the air and snatched the cobra. The violent red-orange creature bit him hard into his scales. He yelped with pain, but was able to kill it with his fire breath.
"Are you okay?" he asked Sapphire.
Sapphire nodded at him. "Thank you for saving me. Who are you?" she asked him.
"I'm Futureseer," said the dragonet. "I think I can see the future."
"I'm Sapphire," she told him. "Are you a NightWing?" Sapphire asked.
"Yes, I am. Are you a SeaWing?" he asked back.
A NightWing dragonet? He saved me. Can all NightWings see the future, or is he weird like me? she wondered.
"Sort of," she replied. "Aren't the SeaWings and NightWings at war?" she asked him.
He nodded his head. "But dragonets aren't apart of it," he told her, rolling his eyes. He stared at her face that was dripping with blood. "What are you doing out here all alone and so far away from the Kingdom of Sea?" he asked her.
"I don't live in the Kingdom of Sea. I live in Reef Beach and I just recently snuck out. I'm also weird looking and my parents left my egg there," she answered.
"Those are some bad parents. I don't think you're weird looking. I snuck out of my home, too. Want to travel together?" Futureseer asked her.
"Sure!" Sapphire exclaimed.
"First, we have to help you heal. Take this," Futureseer said. He handed her a purple and green plant.
"Am I supposed to eat this?" Sapphire asked, bringing it close to her mouth.
"No, no! Don't eat it. Rub it on your wound," he said taking her arm away from her face. Sapphire rubbed it on her bleeding face. It felt numbing and cold. The blood stopped spilling and she sighed, hoping it could heal her. The dark blue and black dragonets flew together through the forest. It started to rain and the dragonets flew down under a tree to avoid getting wet and get rest. The rain had washed away her blood, but the pain still ached. Sapphire checked her pouch to make sure none of her scrolls were wet. She grabbed out a scroll and read the "Healing Tips" chapter. Rest, she thought as she read the scroll. She was feeling hungry, and grabbed a fish and started eating. She stared at the forest listening to the birds chirping. "Rain," she quietly said to herself. She turned around and noticed that Futureseer had fallen asleep on the tree trunk. I should get back home soon. Everyone would be worried sick about me, especially Catfish. But I did promise Futureseer that I would travel with him. He seems lonely like he needs a friend. What should I do? she wondered. She felt tired as well and fell asleep to the sound of the rain.
"Sapphire?" a voice called out. "Sapphire! Come on, the NightWings are coming!" As soon she opened her eyes, Futureseer had suddenly grabbed her and flew towards the mountains.
"What is it?" she asked tiredly flying alongside Futureseer. She touched her face gently to see if the blood was still there. It had washed off and resting made her feel a lot better, however the pain still ached a bit.
"The NightWings are flying towards us. They were looking for me, and if they saw you— they would've taken you prisoner, or even worse! We have to fly away as fast as possible," Futureseer said quickly. Sapphire turned her head around and saw black and purple dragons heading towards them in the distant. She jumped out of Futureseer's arms and started flying on her own. The pain in her face couldn't just fade away. It made her want to collapse, but she had to keep up with Futureseer. He would turn around occasionally to check if Sapphire was still there.
"I'm still here," she told him. She didn't want him to worry about her. She could probably take care of herself on her own. Then again, she was only a three year-old dragonet who was still practicing to fly better. Flying was exhausting and she headed towards a tree. "Can we take a break?" she asked, gasping for air.
"But we have to keep moving!" Futureseer yelled. She looked at him in a disappointing way. He sighed and landed towards the tree beside her. "I wish I knew directions," he said pointing towards the rising sky. Sapphire realized it had already been a whole day. The sun was rising and her friends must've been worried sick about her. She looked at him then back to her pouch. She began digging in towards it. "What are you looking for?" Futureseer asked.
"Here," she said taking out her star scroll. She opened it and pointed toward the North Star chapter. She handed it over to Futureseer. Even though she had just met him, she felt comfortable with him. Like a friend. Futureseer peered into the scroll and headed towards the sky. "Wait up!" Sapphire shouted as he took off. She flew with him and asked him where they were going.
"Safety," he said slowly. "To my den." Terror ran through Sapphire's scales. The NightWings and SeaWings were in war. How could this be safe for her? Futureseer saw the look on her face and patted her on the head. "My den isn't in the Night Kingdom," he said reassuring her. Sapphire was relieved and turned around, scanning the far away NightWings. They had to lose them.
"I have a plan, Futureseer. We'll try to lose them by taking random directions and back to our destination," she told him.
"Sounds like a good plan to me," he said patting her. They took turns left and right. The two dragons swooped to a tree and another. They finally took a turn to the left to head back to their path when they were sure they had lost the NightWings.
They landed towards a tree to rest. Sapphire was exhausted yet excited to see the world. She'd always imagined it to be the same old boring beach like where she lives. But no, it was huge. Bigger than she thought. Green was everywhere and yellow spurted from the ground. Pink flowers were blooming on the trees and the sunrise was beautiful. She had only seen these colors in coral. She glanced at the beautiful landscape and nudged Futureseer on the shoulder. "Ready to take off?" she said. He nodded and took off towards the sky. He looked at the scroll again and zoomed off. Sapphire wasn't a fast flyer so she had to use all her energy to keep up with him. The sun started getting higher and the stars were fading.
"No, no, no!" Futureseer screamed. "It can't fade away now! We're almost there!" He sprinted even faster and left Sapphire behind. Sapphire felt still and flew after him. The stars finally faded away and the sun was high in the sky.
No! Everyone at Reef Beach is probably awake now. They're going to look for me! I have to get back, but— Futureseer. Could I tell him now? Sapphire panicked with a bundle of thoughts. Futureseer glanced at her noticing her worried face. He grabbed her by the shoulder and landing gracefully on a stone platform.
"We're here. This is my den! Sapphire, look!" he beckoned to her quickly. Sapphire was amazed of how clean it was. No pile of leaves covering it. Clear windows. And best of all, amazing furniture! She stared in awe. "Come on!" Futureseer said as he held her talons. He walked over to what looked like a chest to Sapphire. He dug into it and pulled out a wrinkly scroll. He unrolled it and the scroll showed scribbles here and there.
"What's this?" she asked pointing to all the scribbles.
"A map!" Futureseer exclaimed. "This is the map to my den!"
"Oh," Sapphire responded. She looked at it, wondering how it was a map. She could see some words, Home, [something] Mountains, Night Kingdom, Lake. The others were words she never seen before. She finally figured out an idea of how to get home without upsetting Futureseer. It was still early in the morning. Most of her friends were probably still sleeping. "Could I have the map?" she asked.
"The map? Why?" Futureseer asked.
"I need to get home and I could use the map to visit you every now and then," she replied.
"Oh! You may take it, Sapphire. You're my friend after all," he said.
He considers me as a friend, Sapphire thought. "Thank you," she said as she bowed to Futureseer.
"I guess this means goodbye," Futureseer said softly. "Goodbye, Sapphire!" he said as he waved his talons as she slowly walked away.
"Goodbye, Futureseer! And thank you!" she shouted to him. She flew off and waved back as she headed towards the Reef Beach.
She knew it was close looking at the map. She recognized the places they've passed before. She finally reached Reef Beach and crouched low behind a bush to make sure no one would see her. She turned her head around left and right scanning the area. She let out a sigh of relief and jumped into the lake. It feels so good to be home, she thought. She poked her head out of the water and saw her friends surrounding something. Everyone else was there too. They seemed to be surrounding something and murmured to theirselves. What were they doing?
