Killing was a slow bath of ice water dripping over my head and freezing my senses dull with a numbing cold. I lunged and sliced forward with my knives like they were claws, a growl low and hungry in my throat. Phoenix cut forward next to me, wielding one gun in each hand. He made his shots count, shooting out both knees of my opponent while I crunched the man's head into my knee and broke his nose with a loud CRACK!
A bullet punched hard through my armored vest, knocking me one step backward. Before Phoenix could release a round of bullets, I slung my knife through the air at my target. It spun and lodged straight into his eye with a satisfying squelch. The man sunk to the floor, grasping at his rapidly bleeding face. I stalked to the man, yanked my knife from his eye, and gashed open his throat. A spurt of red coated my vest and splatted against my neck.
I spun for the next kill, but the hallway was empty except for the littered bodies of the security guards, and my knives fell into the open air.
More. I needed more.
Only Phoenix stood behind me, his back to Alex and Jackson as they entered the server room. His familiar scent washed over me, his pheromones high in the air after the thrill of the kill. He had a sloppy grin on his face and a dopey downward pull to his brown eyes that made me melt inside. I wanted to throw myself into his arms, but I managed only one step forward before I doubled over with pain.
I dropped to one knee, slinging an arm around my middle as if I could squeeze the pain out of my body. My stressed perfume flowered around me, coating the air in thick tendrils of warm vanilla sugar until I was choking on my own scent... I swore I smelled more like an omega than I did an alpha.
Phoenix hardly seemed to notice, or maybe he was just so used to the flowering of my vanilla scent after a kill.
Phoenix crouched next to me, tugging my arms away from my middle as he inspected me. "You hurt, Wren?" Worry pulled at his silky voice, and I wanted to swoon in his arms.
My hindbrain stirred inside me. My alpha, it roared. Mine.
I stuffed the instinct deep down inside me where it could never surface again and reminded myself to breathe. My period must've been coming on, and my hormones were all mixed up. That must have been why I so suddenly wanted to jump down Phoenix's pants – not that I'd never thought about it before.
I propped myself on Phoenix's shoulder and dragged myself to my feet, gritting out a high feral growl that sounded like a whine. Phoenix guided me from the downstairs tech center of Ivory Towers, all the way upstairs to the van in the garage deck, where the others would join us when they'd retrieved the data. I found that I didn't mind the supportive touch. I craved it. Phoenix was my pack.
Janson sat in the driver's seat with his laptop in settled on his legs, and I crawled up to the passenger's seat from the back of the van.
Jan took one whiff of my vanilla and clover perfume and scowled. "Do you have to get off every time you kill?" Jan hissed, holding his breath. He bunched his hands to his sides as if he was afraid I would touch him.
"You get off after a kill?" Phoenix asked eagerly, his intention heavy in his half-lidded eyes as he drank in the perfume quickly filling the enclosed space.
"You know what I meant," Jan snapped. His hand moved to the buttons on the side of his door, and he rolled down all of the windows in the front.
I would have answered, but another wave of cramps quaked between my hips. I scrunched my legs up to my chest and bent forward over the cramps, hands working at my shoes as I tried to take them off between rapid painful breaths. I growled, and this time it came out a genuine whine, a high-pitched sound that startled Jan straight in his seat. Phoenix perked up, brown eyes widening like dinner plants.
