He was dead. My father was dead.

"We can't go to the house," Jan said. He held me in his arms in the backseat of the van, and his hands stroked up and down my back. "Aurelius's generals might regroup."

I bristled within his arms. A low growl ripped through my throat.

"It's okay, sweetheart. Aurelius is dead," Jan whispered to me.

"The safehouse on 2nd Street then," Alex said, nodding. "That's the one Jack doesn't know about. Need to get her somewhere for the rest of the heat."

"Can't you drive any faster?" Phoenix's heavy spice scented in my nose, too hot. I could feel Phoenix reeling from the high of the kill, the reunion. His excitement and anger was palpable in the bond. He looked back to meet my eyes, and the bond sparked with a sudden flare of burning happiness.

My time in the lab rushed through my head until it spun. Jack's dark chocolate espresso cologne still filled my nose – He was still on my skin, still inside. I rubbed my nose up and down Jan's throat until a soft purr rumbled through his chest and my nose was full of leather and tobacco.

I didn't get to see the penthouse because Jan carried me through the house nestled in his arms. He set me down in the bed and covered me over with a blanket that didn't smell like anything but harsh laundry softener. I whined as Jan let me go, but Alex took his place and began rubbing circles in my back. I bundled my hands in his shirt and cuddled my head in his lap, drinking in fresh cold lemons. With every touch, some of the pain in my body shed away.

"Jan went to go fetch you a bath," Alex murmured.

I whined, and I felt Alex flinch. His hand petted up and down my back.

I hated water. But I hated Jack's scent on my skin even more. I wanted to scrub myself clean until there was nothing left of my skin and I was only bones. But I was limp and numb, and shaking all over.

"Phoenix," I whispered.

"I'm right here, little omega," Phoenix said from my other side.

"Phoenix is scared you'll hate him for bonding you," Alex chuckled. "I'm still a little mad I didn't get to bite you first, but I know exactly where I'm going to put my mark."

My head whirled and ached, and I couldn't process everything Alex said at once. Phoenix was scared? Alex wanted to bite me? When had the world turned upside down?

I whined and scratched the scabbing bitemark at my neck. "Hurts," I hissed.

Phoenix dragged my hand away from the mark. I whined again, but a second later, his lips were against his teethmarks, licking up the salt from my wounds. I reached up a hand to instinctively clutch his hair, bearing him down against his mark until he was fully lapping at the wounds. A warm balloon of happiness tilted in my stomach, high against the heady darkness of the pain in my body.

I didn't know how long we stayed like that, all wrapped up in each other's laps and arms as Phoenix sucked and soothed his bite marks against my throat. When I was tilting off into blissful sleep, Jan scooped me up in his arms.

"It's bathtime, sweetheart," he said, walking me over to where the steam was filling the bathroom. "I'm going to set you on your feet, love, okay?"

I held onto Jan as he set me unsteadily on my feet. He pulled away from me for Phoenix to lift my arms above my head. He shifted the paper tunic up and over my arms. His hands were gentle, his thrum through the bond a security blanket that washed up through my throat. Phoenix slipped his hands under my scrub pants, pulling them down over my ass and letting them drop to the floor. His hands tightened around my hips as he saw that I was bare and bruised underneath.

"Wren, what did he do to you?" Phoenix hissed out. His nose was wide, and I realized my vanilla perfume was still a burnt sugar taste in the air.

The empty void of my chest clawed at the pain ringing in my body. Finding my strength, I settled myself in the clawfoot tub, sinking into the water up to my shoulders. My wild black hair floated around me.

"I'm going to kill him," Phoenix said. "Please, let me kill him for you, princess."

I twirled my hand in the water and my head tipped up to stare at the papered wall. "No," I said numbly. "The kill is mine."
