Jan carried my weight against him as we glided up to the top floor in the elevator. I limped with his help up the last flight of stairs to the helicopter landing pad.

The helicopter sat in the center of the pad. Black-clad Dark Angels agents held a line around the pad in uniform. My father was on his knees, his tie roughly secured to the back of his head. Someone had zip tied his hands to his back. Alex stood in front of him with an unbreaking glare and a pistol pointed at his head. Phoenix paced back and forth in front of them both.

Phoenix's nose twitched, and he inhaled a strong whiff of my burnt sugar perfume. Phoenix rushed toward me with his arms outstretched. I ran to meet him and sunk into them easily, craving my mate's touch.

"What happened, princess?" Phoenix murmured into my hair.

His voice was too soft. I pulled away, remembering that my father was on his knees only a few paces away. Aurelius didn't deserve to witness my happiness.

"We lost Jack," Jan said to Phoenix.

"We'll find him after we deal with this one," Alex said.

Phoenix recognized the sudden shift in my demeanor. He backed away from me, dipping his head with a slight nod. "I lost all my knives," Phoenix said, and there was regret in his voice and his eyes – He wanted to watch me slit open my father's throat.

"That's okay," I said. I held out my hand to Alex. "I want this over quickly."

Alex pressed the gun into my outstretched hand. I walked up to my father until the gun was pressed to his skull and he was whimpering behind his gag.

I pulled the trigger. A bloody hole blasted through his face between his eyes. Once his eyes had matched mine, black as coal and the world beneath as he'd always said. Now they were bloody red pulps squishing out of his eye sockets.

The floor rushed up to meet me. Jan caught me just as my legs collapsed out from underneath me. I sagged his arms, and he sat with me, holding me for a long time.
