Eighteen

The rush of the high was unlike any other I had felt in my life. I could feel both of our orgasms roaring through our bodies like the crash of ocean waves. The fire in my belly finally spread across all my limbs, sparking little bonfires where Phoenix's skin touched mine. He was nestled inside, twitching as his head expelled his hot, sticky cum against my womb. He felt so good like that, so perfect that I didn't want him to ever move.

Then I felt the warm blood sliding from my throat and dripping onto the bed behind me, the moisture soaked up into the sheet beneath my shoulder. Phoenix was latched onto my throat, his set of canines sunk straight through my flesh in a bonafide bonding mark.

My sickly sweet vanilla perfume was burnt, searing my fear into the air as I realized what I'd just done. I'd just asked Pheonix to bite me.

"You bit me." My whimper was soft and high and scared. My arousal was quickly turning to burnt vanilla and smokey clover in the air.

He was not a good alpha, I knew. And he would never disobey a command from me. Of course he had bitten me when I asked him to.

Phoenix's smell was a spicy wash of his stinking fear. He licked at his wound, cleaning up the blood until it was smeared on his lips as he looked at me with the biggest puppy dog brown eyes I'd ever seen. He leaned back when the wound wasn't bleeding anymore, and we panted together, our eyes frozen to one another's. He seemed afraid to look at the wound, and when he did, his lips parted and he let off another wave of fear-scented chili peppers that I'd never smelled so strongly on him before.

"I bit you," he said, and his voice was numb as if he couldn't even taste the words on his tongue in the fear-scented hormone cocoon that was his bedroom.

For the first time, I felt Phoenix's fear. It was ice in my veins, rapidly cooling the heat that had spread through my body moments before. It was regret, and sorrow, such deep sorrow that I realized with a start that Phoenix hated himself – And hated himself even more for doing this to me, for losing control, for taking away my choice.

Phoenix's bedroom door knocked off its hinges, and I squinted my eyes at the doorway, trying to make out the three figures shadowed against the light of the hallway. Alex was holding a pistol in his hands, and his hazel eyes darted furiously around the room before they landed on Phoenix and I tangled in the bed. Jan lingered behind with a knife, and Jack leered in the front, his eyes locked on my bloody throat facing the doorway.

"They're bonded," Jan choked out, trying to grab at Alex before he stomped into the room. "They're mates, Alex."

But Alex launched himself toward us, growling, "Are you knotted? Are you knotted, Phoenix?"

Phoenix, looking like a deer caught in headlights, shook his head slightly from left to right. Alex grabbed the other alpha's arm and threw him off the bed, and I flinched at the sudden emptiness as Phoenix's flaccid cock was ripped out of me. His cum spilled down my thighs.

Before I knew what was happening, Jack's arms were around me and he pulled me off the couch.

"Jack, wait, I –"

"Alex, they're mates now," Jan said with all his cool composure as we brushed past him.

I tried to pull against Jack's grip, but he placed me easily outside Phoenix's bedroom door. He shut it behind us just as I heard the smashing impact of Alex's fist against Phoenix's face. Pain and resignation tugged at the other end of the bond bitten into my neck. He wasn't going to fight back.

"Alex, stop." Jan's voice cut through the door, and there was a scuffling behind as Jan restrained Alex. Guilt thrummed through the bond. I wanted to rip open the door and take Phoenix up in my arms, but Jack was holding onto my wrist.

I wasn't sure when Jack had collected my clothes from the floor, but he stuffed my hands full of my pajama t-shirt and shorts. "Put these on, Wren."

My head roared with Phoenix's fear, and I slipped on the clothes. Numbly, I let Jack lead me. I thought he would take me back to the nest he'd helped set up for me, but he roped me downstairs. I shivered in my bare feet and the short shorts, and an icy ache inside begged for Phoenix, my alpha, my mate. I hoped Alex wasn't beating him half to death for doing something I had asked him to do in the heat of the moment.

Jack dragged me out to the back deck of the Dark Angels' pack house and into the cool night air of the backyard. "Jack, why are we out here? Phoenix –"

"Shouldn't have bitten you," Jack snapped. He growled a full alpha growl that made me cower backward. His hand clasped tightly around my wrist.

"No," I agreed breathily. I wound one of my hands around his grip on my wrist. "No, maybe not, but it wasn't his fault."

Jack laughed, even and cold and so unlike him. "I knew you were trouble, Wren, but I didn't expect this. Then again, maybe it'll be easier to bite you when you're begging for it."

Shock ran like ice through my veins. "What? What do you mean you want to bite me? I thought we all agreed –"

"That was before Phoenix bit you, Wren," he said, and I didn't like the way my name twisted on his tongue. "Plans have changed."

His grip was painful around my wrist. Something was wrong.

I stepped forward and jutted out my chin, challenging him like an alpha would. "What plans, Jack?"

"Nothing your father would want you worrying your pretty little head about."

Jack's dark chocolate cologne turned sour in my nose. My throat ached and my head rung, and his words sirened alarm bells in my ears. Jack didn't know my father – couldn't know my father. He'd been just as surprised as I was to see my file and my designation. Right?

"Who do you think gave the Dark Angels the contract on your head?"

Shock rooted me to the ground. "My father – he gave it to you?"

Jack smirked, and for the first time, I noticed the wicked turn on his lips. "This was always the plan, Wren. We caught you, we made a pack, and then we waited... until your heat came."

"The others –" I tried to get away, but Jack's grip held me fast to him.

"The others don't know a thing," Jack said. He snaked a hand up my arm to my neck, and I shuddered. "They're why we had to make that silly no-biting pact. Phoenix ruined everything."

I needed to run, but it was too late. Jack's hand on my neck hid a small needle, and it punctured my vein with a chemical that smelled like bleach and burned the little hairs in my nose. I collapsed in Jack's arms.

"Don't worry, Wren. I'll get you back to your father."

Jack's bitter laugh was the last thing I heard before my vision went dark.
