"That's our boat home?" Carthings said as Y/N nodded.
"Yes. I'm causing a nice little distraction for the krauts, you just take the boat, hop back home to blighty for a few days, and then come back the way we did last time, only this time you'll know what to expect." Y/N said as he smiled at Carthings.
"And what will you be doing?"
"I'll be enjoying my leave, here." Y/N said as he patted Carthings on the shoulder.
"You mean you're going to be staying here in occupied territory alone?"
"While I'm touched by your concern Carthings, let me clear this up, move your arse." Y/N said as Carthings left alongside the men, with Y/N making his way towards a nearby airfield, crawling through the muddy mine field and planting demolition charges around the perimeter fence before climbing over the fence, sneaking to the planes and planting explosives on the planes before creeping away. He made it to a small hill nearby and waited for Carthings signal.
An hour passed until Carthings sent the signal, Y/N detonated the charges and watched the airfield go up in flames.
Y/N ran to a decent hiding spot and watched as Carthings and the men made their break for it.
"Enjoy your holiday boys." Y/N said as he walked away from his hiding spot and headed back to camp, making sure that he wasn't tracked. He climbed into his officers tent up in the tree house community and sat down on the bed before running his hand over his face, looking to the photo of Dierdre.
He picked the photo up and looked at it for a moment before putting it back, laying down on his bed and closing his eyes, trying to get some sleep.
Y/N shot awake from a nightmare, his breathing was fast as he took a moment to compose himself, he looked down at his hand and felt it tremor slightly before he gripped his wrist and breathed slightly.
When he stood up, Y/N changed into some civilian clothing. As he stepped out of the tent Y/N approached the radio shack.
"Beekeeper to Farm, are the Hens all in the Henhouse, over."
"Farm to Beekeeper, no foxes in the henhouse, over."
"Understood, have a good season, over."
Y/N turned off the radio and left, heading into the nearby town, avoiding patrols until he reached Dierdre's hotel, he entered the Hotel and headed up to her room, knocking on the door.
Dierdre opened the door wearing a night gown and with her makeup half complete, her hair was in a towel, indicating she had only just gotten out of the bath. She poked her head out of the room and looked around before inviting him in.
"I'd have thought you'd have gone home with your men." Dierdre said as Y/N shook his head.
"Why bother, it's not like anyone's waiting for me back home is it?" Y/N said, somewhat coldly as Dierdre looked at him.
"Y/N, not this again-"
"Lying to your father I understand, but to me? Of all the people, me? How do you expect me to feel? I went to fight in a war just to get your fathers blessing, what if when this was all over, I came home and found out you had been killed, what then?" Y/N asked as Dierdre looked at him.
"This is why I didn't tell you, because I knew you would react like this." Dierdre answered as Y/N looked like he had been slapped in the face.
"I wouldn't, if you'd have told me, I'd have been right there alongside you. Since when did I ever get in the way of you doing what it was that you wanted to do? Did you think I wouldn't support you, tell you to go to the kitchen, something like that?"
"Yes." Dierdre said as Y/N again looked like he had been slapped in the face.
"So you just think the worst of me in every aspect? You assumed I'd go whoring, you assumed I'd actually cheat on you, you assume that I'd be unsupportive of your independence?" Y/N said as Dierdre looked at him. "Right now the only one being unfaithful in this room is you, because you don't even have enough faith in me to trust me with the basics."
Y/N shook his head as he looked out at Diedre.
"If you had told me, I would support you every step of the way, and even when I questioned some things, we would work through it together, like a couple does."
"I did what I did. I'm sorry if it hurt you that I don't rely on your permission to make decisions-"
"Don't give me that bollocks. You know this is about more than that. Why? Why did you lie, to me?"
"Why did you leave? You ran off to battle thousands of miles away." Dierdre said as Y/N sighed.
"I told you, to get your fathers permission-"
"We could have eloped together you stupid, prideful, bastard." Dierdre said as Y/N looked at her.
Y/N put his hand on Dierdre's cheek and wiped the tear away but she swatted his hand away.
"You had something on your cheek." Y/N remarked.
Y/N leaned against the windowsill and lowered his head, the heavy silence that filled the room apparently weighing on his shoulders as they slouched slightly. Dierdre looked at him for a moment as she was silent.
"All I ever wanted was to do right by you, I figured I would go off to war, get a commendation, come home, we could marry and move down to the country, away from the bombings, live together, grow old with a family around us. It was never meant to be like... like this." Y/N said as he looked at Diedre.
"Life is rarely ever what we want it to be. It seems we just can't get any luck." Dierdre said as Y/N chuckled.
"We're both alive, that's as lucky as you can get in this line of work." Y/N answered as Diedre walked up to him.
"I'm sorry Y/N. I'm sorry I believed the worst of you." Diedre said as Y/N looked at her.
"I should have just asked you to elope with me." Y/N said with a chuckle as Diedre smiled, looking at him.
"A house in the country sounds nice, maybe a little cottage, a white picket fence, a lovely flowerbed in the garden." Diedre said as Y/N smiled.
"An actual bed to sleep in." Y/N said with a smile. "With real pillows, not the bicycle seats you get in camps."
Diedre looked at him and saw he was hiding something, some sort of insecurity. She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.
"Maybe a farm, the two of us living off of the land, tending to the farm in the day..."
"Shagging in haybales by night." Y/N joked, earning a blush and laugh from Diedre as she put her arms around Y/N's arm, the pair of them looking out at the night sky. She thought for a moment before looking at their reflection in the window.
"Well, it's no haybale, but what about the hotel bed?" Diedre said as Y/N looked at her.
"Diedre, I don't think-"
"I owe you an apology for... a lot of things Y/N."
"Diedre, if that's the only reason you're offering this then no, I can't acc-"
"Come on Y/N. We could both use some stress relief." Diedre said as she kissed Y/N on the lips...
