Weekend Writing Prompt
The weekly writing challenge that I host on my website (do check it out, if you are interested! The link can be found on my profile page), which is called the Weekend Writing Prompt, gives participants a word and a word count target and encourages them to write what they like (poetry, prose, non-fiction) as long as they hit the exact number of words. Here are 14 examples of the writing prompt challenges I have set over the years:
1. "Outcast" in 150 words
2. "Accidental" in 87 words
3. "Castle" in 100 words
4. "Foundations" in 91
5. "Judge" in 95 words
6. "Haven" in 32 words
7. "Impact" in 67 words
8. "Flutter" in 34 words
9. "Clockwise" in 99 words
10. "Call" in 41 words
11. "Empire" in 70 words
12. "Capricious" in 55 words
13. "Treetop" in 63 words
14. "Midnight" in 94 words
Have a go at tailoring them to your current writing project. If you feel like it might help, either ignore the word count target or set your own. Write 100 words, 250 words or 500 words, if you prefer.
Story Starters
Another useful writing prompt is the story starter, where a sentence is provided, and you write a scene or story from where the sentence ends. Here are five story starters to get you writing:
1. "I can't believe you said that!"
2. He / She / They looked around them, fear growing in the pit of their stomach; they did not recognise this place.
3. It had been ten years since they last met; it could have been longer.
4. He / She / They had tried to do the right thing, so how could things have gone so wrong?
5. He / She / They bent down and picked up the object that was so out of place in this setting, and as they did so... [you finish the sentence]
Picture Prompts
They say a picture paints a thousand words. Write a story or scene inspired by one or all of the following photos. (Photographs copyright, Sammi Cox)
