Locations in stories are important, whether you are a writing a story set within a complex fantasy world or a contemporary romance set in a city anyone anywhere can recognise. The main point about location is that whatever your story, it must come across as authentic to the reader. They must feel like they are there with your characters. They must view it as a real place, whether it is or not.

Exercise: Where is your story set? Is it familiar to you or do you need to do some research? Maybe you need to create a map of a fantasy world, or look in an atlas, or check out a city guide if the place is real. Do you have one location or multiple locations? Some points you might wish to consider:

> What is the main location of your story?

> Where beyond this location does your character go?

> Where does your character live? Do you need a map showing the layout of their apartment, their house, their castle?

> Do you need to know street names for your location? Do you need a town map, county map, country map showing the main landmarks of this location?

> Do you need to know the geography, terrain and landscape of this location? Is there a river flowing through the town? Is the city overlooked by a mountain or dormant volcano?
