VERA STIRRED IN her sleep, a shrill ringing entering her dreams. She let out a groan as she rejoined the conscious world. Her eyes were heavy, and she was content right where she was. She glanced over to see a sleeping Steven wrapped up in her side.

His head rested on her chest, and his breathing was almost in sync with hers. She smiled down at the man, the familiar butterflies fluttering in her stomach. The ringing again cut short the peaceful view, causing her to scowl.

Vera reached over as gently as she could and grabbed the phone, glancing at the screen. Fury's name was popping up, and she audibly gruffed. She couldn't ignore the man forever.

She meticulously slid out from under Steven's grasp, ensuring he stayed asleep as he curled up on the couch alone. She breathed a sigh of relief before scurrying off to her room and shutting the door.

"Hello." She groaned.

"Ever heard of picking up the phone?" His rough voice came through the speaker.

"Have you ever heard of a thing called 'people are sleeping at this time' Fury?" She hissed as she paced around the small room.

"You've been dodging my calls. How's it going there?" He ignored her comment.

"It's going. Don't you trust me to get back to you when I find something worth calling for?" She asked in an annoyed tone.

She didn't like keeping things from her boss, but he didn't need to know about the DID thing. . Or the fact that Steven was asleep in her apartment right now.

Before she left New York, he explicitly told her to stay on the outskirts of Marc's life and become an acquaintance or a friend - definitely didn't say anything about developing feelings for the guy.

"I'm just checking in. Peter said he hadn't heard from you, and I wanted to make sure everything was going as planned." He broke her out of her thoughts.

"Yup, totally going as planned. . Can I go back to sleep now?" She asked with fake enthusiasm and a bit of impatience, not wanting Steven to wake up alone.

"Goodbye." He replied and hung up the phone before she could say anything else.

She scowled at the phone before tossing it onto her bed. She paused and looked at herself in the mirror, fixing her disheveled hair and clothing. She took one more deep breath and stepped back out into the living room, her eyes landing on a now-stirring Steven.

His eyes slowly began to flutter open, and he groaned as he adjusted himself on the couch. Vera made her way over and knelt down beside the large piece of furniture. His gaze landed on her, and a smile immediately adorned his lips.

"Good morning, you." She said sweetly as she reached forward and gently moved a stray curl off of his forehead.

She wasn't sure why she did it; she just couldn't help it. The perfect little curl just needed to be adjusted, and she felt drawn to touch him.
