The sound of Eulalie's gown whispering against the shiny marble floor and her brushing past Kaz left him standing frozen in the archway as the chaos he had predicted and planned for ensued. Clashes of concerned conversations tore through the ballroom and down the moonlit corridors, weaving endlessly through the manor. The old bones seemed to creak their own responses to the uncertainty Eulalie had left her family and guests with.

To his right, Jesper rushed toward Kaz with wide eyes and a hand on one of his pistols. Kaz finally took in a breath, the oxygen that he had deprived himself of burning his lungs.

"What the hell just happened?" Jesper asked from behind him. His usual sunny voice was hoarse like it had been worn in from the cold.

"She turned Killian down," Kaz replied, though he wasn't entirely sure that was even true. A small part of him hoped it was.

"So? Breakups happen every day. You don't have to lose your shit," he said in a mocking tone as if he was trying to pull Kaz away from the scene.

Evidently, it worked. Kaz turned away from the ballroom and down the corridor as Killian started to turn toward him. Kaz ignored Jesper's taunting grain, not caring if he was followed. "Not if you're rich and important, apparently."

Jesper glanced at Killian and hurried after Kaz anyway. He padded at Kaz's heel like a dog.

"You're following her?" Jesper paused, taking in the direction they were headed—the trail of glitter Eulalie had left along the way. Ahead of them were the cliffs shrouded in tendrils of mist and clouds. "You don't think she's going to jump, do you?"

Kaz didn't respond. I would hope not, he thought instead, tightening his jaw as he walked into the entrance hall where he was surrounded by decadent gold and vibrant cobalt blues. He had last Jesper by the time he walked out of the manor. Save for the grass, everything encasing Hiraeth seemed to be completely grayscale, including Kaz in his long black trench coat. Where his hat was, he didn't know, and it didn't matter now.
