Despite the claustrophobia, Kaz ordered his Crows to meet him in his office at the top of the Slat. In the dimly lit office, the scent of damp wood, the unmistakable musk of the Barrel, and faint saltiness from the harbor seeped through the cracks in the windows. The flickering light from a solitary lamp cast shadows on the worn floor.

Eulalie was only a few floors below him, wandering its dark, narrow, labyrinthine hallways. He had put her on the most difficult floor just for fun.

Jesper, who was loitering outside of the Crow Club, was the first to arrive. The doors slowly opened, revealing him, and quickly swung closed. Jesper cringed at the sound. The air stilled and hung thickly between the two men as the silence caved in. Kaz's eyes twitched over to Jesper, fidgeting with the notches on his pistols. His attention remained focused on the door at the back of the room.

The window, protesting with a subtle creak, reluctantly cracked open as Inej gracefully entered, her silhouette momentarily framed against the muted glow of Ketterdam's night.

Kaz stood up as Inej climbed through the window. She said nothing and walked past him.

Inej exchanged glances with Jesper, sharing a silent conversation that transcended words. The window left slightly ajar, allowed the distant sounds of the bustling Barrel to seep in, a constant reminder of the unforgiving world awaiting them beyond the four walls.

"The Winterrose family," Kaz started, surveying the room. "Do they mean anything to either of you?"

"Counter question: if they did mean anything to us, why would it matter?" asked Jesper, raising a finger.

"Because it is important. Have you heard anything about them?" Kaz said; his question was pointed more toward Inej.

"I know Eulalie has a sister with her," Inej spoke up.

"I thought she had eleven sisters," Jesper replied, scrunching his eyebrows.

"Yes, 'had.' Four of them are dead," Kaz said. He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed heavily. "Eulalie's older sister recently died, and she suspects murder. We are going to solve a crime that likely didn't happen."
