"Hi Honey!" I say with a bright smile as I exit the basement. "What were you doing down there?" Jack asks with a raised eyebrow, he has always done this when asking any question even as a young boy as his mom I have always found it adorable but it's annoying right now. "Just cleaning up, and putting things away from our camping trip last weekend. How was school?" Jack goes on the describe his day at school I half listen as I notice a small spot of blood on the floor next to the kitchen island where Mark had laid dead moments before. "Mom are you even listening to me?" "Yes of course honey" I say as I ruffle his hair and move myself across the kitchen. "Well I asked you a question and you have a blank look on your face." I slowly move my foot out of my crocs and soak up the blood into my sock. "I'm sorry what was your question?" "I asked where dad is?" I feel my stomach go into my throat "He left for a business trip this morning, Michigan I think?" Mark has worked as a pharmaceutical salesman our entire 15 years of marriage so business trips were a regular occurrence. "I didn't think he was leaving until next week? He said we could throw baseball in the back yard if it was nice out after school." Jack has always been wise for his age so it's not surprising that he remembers his dad wasn't suppose to leave until Monday. "He said there was a big recall on a some heart medication and they needed to go collect all the meds they sold last week" Jack rolls his eyes setting his back pack down on the kitchen table getting out his homework to start. I admire my son, my smart, handsome, sweet boy who looks just like his dad. He inherited his dad's bright blue eyes and goofy grin. He inherited his height and weight from me unfortunately I have always been short and on the thicker side as Mark was tall. "Stop staring at me mom." I sigh and roll my eyes. I get the pots and pans out and start dinner, spaghetti Mark's favorite.
