The next morning, Patricia had woken Shelby up from the couch. Caleb and his brother, Travis, had dropped off the rest of Shelby's things in the driveway. The fact Caleb didn't come to the door or say anything made Shelby's heartbreak even worse. She spent the entire day laying around watching old black and white films while her mother cleaned the house. Not even Audrey Hepburn's starring in the 1953 classic 'Roman Holiday' could cheer Shelby up.

After helping her mother clean the dishes from dinner, Shelby laid back on the couch. The landline wrung. Ironically, it seemed like they were the last people to have a landline. Patricia walks through the living room, shaking her head at her daughter as she passes by.

"You're going to have to pull yourself out of this, Shelby." Patricia shakes her head, sighing. "I had to with your father, and God knows I'm still not completely over it."

Yes, but Caleb and I have known each other all our lives! He took me to both proms, to every dance. Shelby buries her head into the pillow at the memories, Caleb wanted to get an apartment together! I thought we were going to get married someday!

Footsteps echo from the kitchen into the living room.

"Shelby? Shelby, sweetheart, it's for you." Patricia says from the kitchen, "It's Mr. Strong."

Shelby raises her head. "Tell him I'm dead."

"Shelby Anne Benes, get your butt in there and talk to this man." Patricia commands, "And apologize for your rude behavior last night. I'm sure he will understand, given all you've been through. Now, go on."

The twenty-four year-old brunette rises from the couch. She unhappily makes her way into the kitchen to the counter where the phone had been placed. Pausing for a moment, feeling embarrassed by how she had behaved the night before, she gathers herself before putting the phone to her face.

"Hello?" Shelby forces herself to say.

"Shelby? This is Jake Strong. I'm outside." He states.

Shelby arches her brows, bending forward to get a look out the dining room window.

"Hold on." She says, moving around the counter to get a better look out the window. Phone still in hand. She sees his truck parked on the side of the road. "Yep, I see you."

"I need to speak with you alone about something." The tone in his voice sounds off, unsteady. "Come out here so we can talk."

Oh no. What else has happened regarding my situation with Mr. Wiler? Ah! Shelby's jaws clench in frustration.

"Alright." Shelby says before hanging up.

Shelby makes her way out of the kitchen and into the living room. Patricia sits on the couch with her sewing kit and reading glasses. She smiles up at her daughter.
