Cassidy crossed her arms and leaned against the table. "How did you and Jake meet? We didn't even know he was seeing anyone."

Shelby thought about the story they had come up with, thinking quickly as a way to make it seem smooth and believable. "About three years ago...my dad died."

"Oh!" both Cassidy and Marissa said in unison, their brows furrowing slightly with puckered lips of sympathy.

"And, like every summer for as long as I could remember, my mom took me to work with her at Miss Glynda's–"

"Your mom works for Miss Glynda? What does she do?" Cassidy interrupted, asking in confusion.

"She...cleans houses. She's a housekeeper." Shelby explained, feeling pressured despite so far telling the truth. "She's worked for Miss Glynda since...before I ever became a possibility."

"Oh, neat." Marissa smiled.

"Wait...Oh! That's where I've seen you!" Cassidy widely smiles, "Yeah, I've seen you with your mom a few times after I went to pick Marquis up from partying all night at Jake's. I think you were watering the flowers outside, or feeding the stray dog that hangs around the neighborhood. I give him treats, even though it ticks Marquis off."

Shelby nodded, smirking as she mentally recalled one of the many tasks that Miss Glynda always has for both her and Partricia to do. Some seemingly ridiculous things such as feeding the raccoons cut-up hotdogs fresh from the package or throwing the water snakes that manage to get inside her garage back into the river instead of chopping its head off. Miss Glynda was many things, but she never harmed any animal that came across her path. Well, despite insects.

Shelby continued with her story as she carefully thought each detail through. "Yep, that's me and my mom. We, um...Miss Glynda asked me to go over to Jake's to ask for something–I think it was an extension for the water hose, and...that's how we met. I went over and asked, he showed me where it was and later I came back to give the hose back. Mom goes to Miss Glynda's every Tuesday, like she always has, and so I had to borrow Jake's water-hose for Miss Glynda a lot that summer."

"Mmm!" Cassidy's shoulder moved inward as she smiled wickedly, giggling at her own words. "Borrowed his water hose, huh?"

Marissa chuckles along, rolling her eyes at Cassidy's naughty remark. Shelby blushes, trying to think of more to say to sound convincing.

"Well, Jake really helped me get through losing my dad. It...was really tough that summer after he passed." Shelby nodded, mentally recalling how hard that summer was after John had passed. They were all supposed to go on vacation to Colorado to visit Patricia's sister, Ellen, which never happened. "It started out as a simple fling, nothing too serious. But, the next summer, we kind of picked up where we left off and things...grew."
