- bouquet of irises and baby breaths for Patricia -
Before entering the room, Shelby knocked on the hospital door. She had bought a small bouquet of flowers for her mother, iris and baby breaths which were Patricia's favorites. Shelby had brought in her wedding dress with the veil to show her mother, having it neatly tucked in the garment bag. She hoped her mother would approve of the dress, given she had randomly chosen a dress without care after her incident with the Wiler women.
Shelby peeked inside, her nose wrinkling at the stale hospital smell. Like sickness and sweating bodies. The curtain had been pulled for privacy. Shelby roamed further into the room, pulling back the curtain to reveal her mother laying in the hospital bed. The sight nearly choked Shelby up, seeing her mother laying in a hospital bed with tubes and wires all around her. Looking helpless and small.
Upon seeing her daughter, Patricia softly smiles with joy. She lifts her arm, her hand reaching out to her. Tears began to escape down the older woman's aged cheeks. Shelby sets down her mother's suitcase of clothes she had gathered for her.
"Shelby? Oh, Shelby!" Patricia weakly grinned, her cheeks pale. "My sweet girl, you're alright. I was so worried. I woke up and you weren't here. I thought maybe something bad had happened."
"No, Mom, Jake thought I should rest and take my mind off of...everything that happened." Shelby slightly shakes her head, the memories of the night before haunting her thoughts.
Shelby quickly made her way over to her mother, handing her the bouquet. Patricia's mouth formed a perfect 'O' at the sight, shaking her head. She gives her daughter a stern expression.
"Shelby Anne Benes, what have you done now? My, my!" Patricia loudly mutters as she smells the flowers, smiling. Her hands tremble. "They smell wonderful. But you didn't have to get me flowers. I just wanted to see my sweet girl."
"Well, I wanted to–" Shelby gets cut off.
"What do you have there?" Patricia nods to the garment bag.
Shelby hesitantly looks between her mother and the plastic pink garment bag. "It's...my wedding dress and veil."
Patricia looks up at her daughter in silence, nodding slowly. She sits back in her hospital bed, a displeased expression on her tired face.
"I didn't know if you wanted to see it..." Shelby's tone remains low, feeling her mother's disappointment. "I know you disapprove of what Jake and I are doing."
"Open it up and let me see." Patricia commands in an even tone, her lips in the form of a line. From her tone, she negatively anticipates what Shelby had chosen.
Shelby lays the garment bag on the bed across Patricia's covered feet. She unzips the pink plastic bag, the dim lighting making the white dress shimmer. She gently takes the silk dress out and holds it up to show her mother.
