Watching the old downtown buildings as they pass by, Shelby's mind is distracted by her own thoughts. A couple nights ago, Patricia had taken rather negatively to Shelby's engagement news. She reminded her daughter of how wrong it was to marry someone whom one did not love, and that a marriage-of-convenience was illegal. Patrica had been surprised that Jake had agreed to go along with the nonsense idea, accusing him of going after her daughter since she was so young and beautiful.

What hurt worse for Shelby was when Patricia accused her daughter of only agreeing to such a horrid affair was because of Caleb. It was true that Shelby felt bitter towards Caleb, and how it all ended. She longed for the boy secretly deep down, but forced herself to focus on matters at hand. While Shelby may not love Jake, Jake was willing to help them in order to protect them against the terrible Michael Wiler and his family. Even if she didn't love Jake, Shelby had thought, at least she could pretend for a while.

It's not real. Shelby repeats to herself, But you need to forget that right now. Forget...him. He chose his family over me, and I will do the same. It's not just me who's being dragged around, it's Mom too.

Pulling up to the historical courthouse, Jake parks the truck. He sits back in his eat, looking at the clock on the radio. They arrived twenty minutes early, just enough time to get their story right to begin to tell people.

"We've got twenty minutes until our appointment." Jake nods, running a hand over his hair. "Unless Jay's big mouth sounded the alarm, I think we're good with these people in here. But we need

Shelby sits up in her seat, feeling sour over her own thoughts of Caleb. "It wouldn't hurt to get to know each other a little."

Jake turns to her and studies her for a moment. Shelby looks off at the grand bridge nearby, a train track rolling through underneath. Through the trees, Shelby watches the train cars roll by at their fast pace. Much like life, it can pass a person by in an instant.

"Having second thoughts? I can take you back home right now and you can give me that ring back." Jake continues to study her as she looks off.

"No, I'm not." Shelby firmly admits, distance in her voice. "This is going to happen..."

"Then what's going on? Hmm? You haven't said a word since I picked you up." Jake firmly speaks, "Come on. I can't go through with this if I can't depend on you to go through with it with me."

"Love sucks." Shelby softly states, her tone resembling her glum feeling inside.

Jake quietly nods, reaching for the key to the truck. The sound of the vehicle's motor restarting catches Shelby's attention. She turns and looks at him confused.

"What are you doing?" Shelby looks between Jake and his hand on the key, "We're doing today"

"No, we're not." Jake firmly states.
