LIAM
"Why?" Her question catches me off guard.
Ahm—
"What? People sending me threats and bullying me online wasn't enough to get your attention."
I blink.
"Me dying was the thing that sounded the alarm. Put you on high alert, made you see the smoke?" She smiles manically. "You do realize how horrible that makes you sound right?"
"I get you're upset."
"Upset?" She scoffs, "you ruined my life Liam Griffith."
That's not fair, "I didn't ask anyone to—"
"I'm not talking about you exposing me." She roll her eyes. "I'm talking about you entering it."
I grimace because that was not necessary.
"I was fine. Everything was fine." She drops her legs but I doubt she sees the left shaking alarmingly.
"No one knew my name...Crazy baristas were not trying to poison me and now," she doesn't seem to believe it. "Now look at me."
I lean against the door and push my hands into the pockets of my jeans. Everything in me wants to hug her and tell her how sorry I am but I—I can't.
I've seen Odessa angry but I have never seen her so...disconnected and grim. The disgust coming from her face alone is—
"You know she's undocumented."
Who?
"The barista from the coffee shop," she answers like she heard me. "Her mother is part of the campus cleaning stuff. When we left the hospital earlier today, she shoved a note in my hand and pleaded with me."
Oh God.
"This poor woman dropped to her knees and begged me not to press charges and when I opened the note..." she sniffles. "...the barista got away with it."
Fuck.
"Just like you will." She adds and I drop my hands,
"What's that supposed to mean?" I just got my ear chewed off, does she really think I wanted all this.
