Chapter One
"Amy, Tyler is looking at you, again," my best friend Emma told me for the thousandth time this year. Emma has frizzy dirty blond hair (so frizzy it looks naturally crimped) that reaches just above her shoulders with bright gray eyes. She has a group of brown freckles spread across the top of her cheeks and nose and a set of perfect dimples. I've always been jealous of her five foot five inch figure with the perfect curves.
While she has the figure of a model, I look quite the opposite. My dark brown hair hangs down to the middle of my back like a straight metal rod. My face was clear of any freckles or dimples with boring dark brown eyes. I didn't have the body like she did. I wasn't fat by any means, but I also wasn't a skinny toothpick. I also didn't have the curves to make me model-worthy. "What else is knew?" I grumbled, while stirring my cookie dough shake around with a plastic spoon.
Emma and I decided to get a shake at our favorite ice-cream shop one more time before we went our separate ways to college. Emma has always wanted to go to California, so she decided to apply for the college there. Unlike her, I chose to just stay closer to my hometown and apply for the college here, that way it would be cheaper and wouldn't be as much trouble as one out of state would be. Even though classes don't start until August which was two months away, she wanted to get to California a little earlier to sight see and get to know where everything was, and to try to get a decent job to pay for the apartment she would be renting.
Emma took another bite of her strawberry milkshake before setting her spoon back in the cup. She looked at me with an "are you kidding me?" look. "Aren't you even just a little bit curious as to why he has had this sudden interest with you for the past year? I mean, he didn't even glance your way until our Senior year. If I were you, I'd be walking up to him and asking him what his problem is. I mean, it's Tyler Black, for crying out loud," she said, raising her voice at the end getting the attention of Tyler and his friends. He winked at us then turned back around.
I rolled my eyes at her. "Well, I'm not like you, and I could care less about Tyler and why he likes to steel occasional glances my way." I scraped the last of my milkshake onto my spoon before putting it in my mouth. "And please, keep your voice down, your attracting unwanted attention," I said nodding in Tyler's direction before getting up to throw my empty cup away.
As it turns out, Emma is right. For some reason Tyler has been taking an unusual interest in me since the beginning of our Senior year. I'd see him almost everywhere I went, in the halls, in the cafeteria, in classes, and he'd be looking at me with a weird expression on his face every time I saw him. Just like today, I'd even catch him looking at me outside of school.
Every other girl my age (including Emma) would kill to be in my position and would think that I'm crazy for not going up and questioning Tyler, but I'm not every other girl. I'm someone who would rather stay at home and read or do homework, rather than going to parties and getting drunk. I'd prefer to not be the center of attention, instead I'm usually on the sidelines of everything.
You're probably wondering how I have any friends if I never talk to anyone. I ask myself that same question all the time. I don't know how Emma and I became friends. It was long before I can remember. We've just always been best friends, since before Kindergarten, even. What made it even more crazy was that we were total opposites of each other. She liked to go out and party and make new friends while I would rather take my dog for a walk. She was always wearing make up and took the time in the morning to find a nice outfit and do her hair. While I was just fine wearing a T-shirt and jeans with no make up on and my hair in a ponytail.
On my way back to my seat I was too busy not looking where I was going that I accidentally ran into a huge boulder. Wait, why would a boulder be in an ice-cream shop? The boulder all the sudden started to laugh. My eyebrows scrunched up together. A boulder can't laugh. I swallowed hard and looked up to see a grinning Tyler. Cheese and crackers. He's not a boulder at all, he's the very boy that has been looking at me.
