Prologue

"Jaan-"

For the first time, the boy wished his name wasn't just a name but a term of endearment.

"Jaan, chhodo mujhe!"

"Itne time tak kuch nahi kiya to ab bhi mat karo! Maroge nahi aap mere bina." Y/n screamed, her eyes overflowing with tears like never-ending rivers.

"Mar jaunga... Nahi jee paunga aapke bina Y/n-" he stuttered, his eyes reflecting the turmoil in Y/n's.

"Jaan!"

Jaan hi to ho aap meri.

He closed his eyes, gripping her hand tighter, hoping to hear something—anything—that might favor his desperate situation or his feelings.

"Jaan, please mera haath chhod dijiye... Hum aur aap kabhi ek nahi ho sakte. It's too late. Meri shaadi aapke Bhai se hone wali hai." Those words were enough for his grip on her palm to loosen.

He bit his lower lip, trying to hold back his sobs as he let go of the girl he loved... for his brother.

Jaan cursed himself internally.

She was never his to begin with. He should have realized that sooner.

Even their first meeting was because of his brother.

How could he have fallen for her?

Itni saari ladkiyan is begairat duniya mein, par is naadan dil ko bhi wahi ladki pasand aani thi jo uski bhai ki hone wali dulhan hai?

"Why?" Jaan whispered softly, as if from the depths of his soul, not really expecting an answer. "Meri kismat mein hi aisa kyu likha hai?"

Hum aapse beintehaa pyaar karte hai, Jaan.

Y/n turned to look back, her eyes hiding a storm, yet she said nothing, none of it. She walked away, leaving Jaan alone with his questions and his solitude.

And there Jaan stood, alone, broken, wondering how a feeling of love, which once seemed so beautiful, could suddenly become so painful.
