Party

Thirty minutes later, Luke parks his motorbike and we head inside Glushy Slush to get 'breakfast' with Ian and Dustin.

"I don't think we should be skipping school," I say.

"We're not. We'll just be late," he reassures me, opening the door for me.

I thank him before continuing. "Three classes late?"

"There was traffic."

"But why are we the only ones late?"

"Babe. Don't worry about it. Order a slushy, relax."

Ian notices us and calls us over to the boys' table.

"Ava!" Dustin notices me and stands up to hug me tightly. He grabs my butt and I pull away. "My bad. My hand slipped."

I slap his arm. "So was that."

Luke glares at him and pushes him away from me. "Don't touch her again."

Dustin holds his hands up in surrender. "Sorry man but that as-"

"Okay!" Ian butts in. "What are we having?"

After ordering, the boys start arguing about some playoff that I couldn't care less about.

Since he's sitting next to me in the booth, Luke puts his arm around the back of my chair and leans back.

I try to discreetly cuddle closer to him, but Dustin being Dustin has to point it out.

"AW LOOK AT THE LOVEBIRDS!" he yells, grinning from ear to ear.

Luke immediately pulls away. Thanks a lot. Jerk.

"Does that mean you're finally over-" Ian is interrupted.

"Here's your food and drinks," the waiter returns with our food.

"I think Dustin will be the last one to get married," Ian says, looking disgusted at the way Dustin eats.

"I can already name one girl who's completely in love with me at this moment," Dustin boasts after stuffing his face.

"Mom's don't count love," I say.

The guys laugh.

"I can name another one!" Dustin defends.

"Grandmother's don't count either," Luke replies.

...

"I have one. Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees?" Ian asks when it's his turn.

"I don't know," three of us agree.

"Because they're really good at it!" he bursts out laughing.

We laugh too. Not at the joke, but because his laugh is contagious.

"We should all hang out tonight," Luke suggests, looking specifically at me.

"I can't. I promised Kyle I would go to his party," I say.

Why did I do that? I should go have fun with them.

No. I promised Kyle. Be a good friend self.

"I don't think you should go," Ian says, throwing me a look I don't recognize. "There's something weird about that guy."

"He's nice. Plus he's been my friend since day one."

"Don't say I didn't warn you."

"Sure Ian," I roll my eyes.

"He is really weird," Luke agrees. "He's always staring at you."

"You stare at her too," Dustin says and he and Ian laugh.

Luke and I look away from each other.

"All I'm saying is, he's weird."

We're so late to school, that we decide to just go to my house and hang out instead.

I pray that nothing embarrassing was left around when we finished unpacking. The last thing I need is for the guys to walk into my room and find a thong.

Thankfully, no underwear was visible when they invaded my room and turned on my television. Dustin invaded the fridge while Ian turned on ESPN. Luke poked around my stuff, then walked into my closet and proceeded to tell me all the items he would want me to try on for him. One of them being lip gloss.

When I asked if he wanted to see if the shade would match my eyes, he told me that he wanted to see me in only the lip gloss.

Despite Ian's warning, I head to Kyle's party.

The first thing I notice, is how strangely quiet it is outside. There are a lot of cars, however, so I assume they're out back or something.

I knock on the door and a guy that I don't know greets me. His shirt is stained with what smells like alcohol. His hair is a mess like he just woke up. His eyes are red and his teeth are yellow.

That's not the worst part. The worst part is the smoke that hits me when the door opens.

First of all, I don't smoke. Never have, never will. Second of all, I'm allergic to smoke. And third of all- I don't have a third of all.

"Hey sexy," the creep says to me. Ew. He doesn't even look like he can stand up straight with the way he's swaying.

I cough and try to subtly cover my mouth from his horrible breath when he leans closer and says, "Wanna have some fun?"

"Get away from her Arron," Kayla says and pushes him away from the door. "Come on in Ava."

"Thanks."

I walk inside, following her into a living room full of people drinking and smoking. Well this isn't what I expected. There's no dancing. The music that is playing is faint and no one seems to be paying any attention to it.

One girl is devouring a bag of Doritos like it's the last one she'll ever have. Calm down. There's more left in the world. To my left, I spot Kyle, smoking what looks like a tiny cigarette. Great. He's one of them.

I walk towards him to say hi, but stop when the smoke hits me and I start coughing so hard I double over. Kayla is at my side immediately.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes," I say even though I can barely breathe and my throat starts to burn.

"Come on," Kyle walks up to us. His eyes are red like the guy from earlier. "I know somewhere that's clear of smoke."

I let him guide me into a hallway and then into a small bedroom. He leads me to a bed and I sit down.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

Kayla follows us in. "Do you want me to get you something to eat?"

"No thank you," I say lying down.

"Well I'm going anyway. Ryan is so cute."

Kyle and I laugh but mine comes out as a half cough. She leaves and Kyle sits next to me.

"Are you gonna be okay?"

I nod. "I feel better now anyway."

"Good." He gets up and closes the door.

"What are you doing?"

He locks it.
