Rite of passage

There was one thing that no boy could turn down, especially a teenager. Something that was a matter of pride and shame and a chance to prove themselves by doing a small task. Most of the time, these 'small tasks' were not something that boys should be doing and it normally ended terribly. But they still got done. And now it was Sunghoon's turn. It was a sort of initiation; a rite of passage into teenagedom. Jake had completed his initiation a week before but his task was a lot smaller. All he had to do was write something vulgar on a teacher's board and not get caught which he accomplished by having a friend jam the cameras until he could get in and out of the room. 

"What are you doing?" Sunoo stared at Sunghoon with wide eyes, taking a moment to let his eyes adjust to the dark. Sunghoon jumped a little then realized it was just his brother and not Ji-an or Heeseung that had caught him. 

"Nothing, Sunnie. Go back to sleep" Sunghoon responded distantly, shoving something into his backpack.

"Why do you need so much toilet paper? Are you having stomach problems? Should I get noona?" Sunoo went to get up and leave the room but Sunghoon stopped him.

"No! I'm fine, just go to sleep. Hyungie will be back soon but you have to promise me something. Do not tell anyone that you saw me leave tonight okay?" Sunghoon tried to seem convincing but Sunoo just gave him a strange look. 

"What is going on?" Jake mumbled, still half asleep. Sunghoon huffed; this was just great. The whole point was to leave without waking anyone.

"Rite of passage" Sunghoon hinted. Jake still had his eyes closed so he only nodded once, turned over and went back to sleep.

"What's rite of passage?" Sunoo wondered, his brows furrowing in confusion.

"Something you will learn about next year when you turn thirteen. Now go to sleep and remember, you promised" Sunghoon zipped up his backpack and opened the window all the way.

"I promised nothing" Sunoo sulked, getting back into bed. Sunghoon climbed out the window and slipped off the roof, landing on the ground in the backyard. He took a moment to catch his breath from the fall and then snuck out of the backyard and went down the street. The house that he was supposed to be going to was not far and he knew the route by heart. Or he thought that he did. By the time he actually got there, Sunghoon swore that at least an hour had passed, which was a lot longer than he wanted to be out. He was hoping to get out to the house, do what he needed and be back in bed within an hour. This night was turning out to be the worst time to do his initiation. 

"Alright, here goes. Please do not wake up" Sunghoon mumbled to himself, dropping his backpack on the sidewalk and opening it, pulling out a roll of toilet paper and throwing it at a tree close to him. He grabbed another and another until the bag was empty and the house in front of plus the yard was covered in white paper. Then he grabbed his backpack and ran. 

"Did you have fun with your rite of passage?" Sunoo asked, bitterly as Sunghoon climbed back into the room and got changed again.

"I thought you would be asleep" Sunghoon ignored the question. Sunoo was quiet for a moment.

"I was worried. You weren't doing anything illegal, were you?" Sunoo wondered, his tone changing completely. Sunghoon bit his lip, laying down and staring at the ceiling. Jake's soft snores filled the silence. When Sunghoon looked over, he was kind of amused to find that him and Sunoo were lying down the exact same way; on their backs with their arms under their heads. 

"I won't be in trouble, Sunnie. Now go to sleep or noona will be mad at both of us for being tired in the morning" Sunghoon rolled over, facing his brother. Jake was still asleep on the other side, the head of his bed right next to the foot of Sunoo's bed.
