1 YEAR & 8 MONTHS EARLIER...
I stood in front of the brick building in the middle of the busy sidewalk. I thought about my chances whether I should skip my appointment or just get it over with.
Julie was the one who referred this therapist to me. She claimed that it would solve all of my problems and that it would make me a changed man.
I wanted to laugh at that, but perhaps she may be right. Maybe someone could convince me enough to do it, but maybe today was not the day.
My phone began to ring just as I took a step forward. Sage was calling.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Hey, what're you doing right now?" He asks. I can hear background sounds coming from his line.
"Don't laugh, but I'm supposed to start therapy today," I confessed to him.
"Seriously?" He asks, "Wait, let me go into a different room." I hear shuffling on the other side of the line and the noises become muffled. "Okay, you were saying?"
I sigh, not wanting to repeat myself, but Sage has always been a good listener. He's much more serious than his idiotic twin.
"I finally caved in and booked an appointment with this therapist. I'm actually standing in front of the building right now."
"Wow, that's admirable. I know it's weird and uncomfortable at first, but I'm sure it'll help you in the long run," he says, "don't feel embarrassed about it too, Vin. You'll be thankful you went through it when you're done. I know you don't like opening up to us, but maybe you can open up to a stranger and release everything you have kept inside."
"I know, but I still can't see myself going deep into my life and talking about everything."
"You don't have to talk about everything on the first day," Sage laughs, "Pretty sure there's a time limit and they'll ask certain questions."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. Well I'm going to head in and get this over with," I say.
"Yeah, no problem dude. I hope everything goes well today," he says.
"Actually, are you guys throwing a party?" I ask.
He chuckles nervously. It's the only laugh that he lets out when he's doing something he's not supposed to. "Yeah, um, Layla invited Maggie and her boyfriend, Eric, over at our place. Apparently it's his birthday week and we're just doing a little something for him before they go back home."
Everyone's life was moving forward whether they wanted to include me or not. This would be the first step towards fixing things about myself that I didn't think needed fixing, but others are saying so without actually saying anything. My attitude was one of them and the other, my feelings.
"Oh, cool. I'll let you get back to that then. I need to get this over with. The sooner I do so, the sooner I can see Charlotte."
"Yeah, sounds good man. I'll talk to you later and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to call me."
