DAY AT ORANGE STAR HIGH SCHOOL
The school bell rang, signaling the end of classes at Orange Star High School. Students streamed out of the building, chatting animatedly about their plans for the afternoon. Veradin and Buljin lingered by the entrance, saying their goodbyes to classmates.
Buljin nudged Kiro. "Hey, we're going to check on Chalk and then head to training at 5 PM, okay?"
Kiro nodded, turning to his best friend, Snack. The two began their usual banter as they walked home.
"So, Kiro," Snack began with a grin, "why didn't you ever tell me you could fly? Imagine all the fun we could've had! Flying to school, playing superheroes, making bets, getting the ladies..." He trailed off, waggling his eyebrows.
Kiro laughed and shook his head. "It wouldn't be fun, Snack. Plus, it's not fair. We have to keep a low profile. Besides, there are disadvantages to what you're talking about."
Snack continued to tease him. "Oh come on, Kiro. You're such a buzzkill. At least we could've been popular!"
Bytes, another friend, appeared seemingly out of nowhere, causing Snack to jump. "I knew," he said quietly.
Snack's eyes widened. "Wait, what? You knew all along?"
Kiro chuckled. "Yeah, I told Bytes because he doesn't talk much and keeps things to himself."
Snack puffed out his chest. "I have a right to freedom of speech, you know. And it wouldn't be so bad being popular."
Kiro just smiled, enjoying the normalcy of their conversation.
Veradin and Buljin flew through the sky, heading towards Chalk's house in East City. Below them, the bustling cityscape looked like a patchwork quilt of activity. Buljin's sharp eyes spotted a familiar face walking down a busy street.
"Isn't that Marron?" Buljin pointed out.
Veradin nodded, and they descended to greet her. "Hey, Marron! Where are you headed?" Veradin called out as they landed.
Marron smiled at the twins. "Hey, you two. I'm going to see my dad. He's been really down since Mom was taken. How about you guys?"
"We're off to check on our friend Chalk," Buljin replied. "Have you noticed people have been getting sick or going missing lately?"
Marron nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, it's been weird. Some people aren't responding well to the vaccine. Dad's been saying it's strange how some bodies might be rejecting it."
Veradin chimed in, his tone analytical. "Scientifically, the vaccine should prevent any resurgence of symptoms. This could be something else, or their bodies might be reacting unexpectedly."
Marron sighed. "It's more than that, I think. Ever since Mom disappeared, Dad's been different. He trains a lot of people at the dojo and helps the local police, but I can tell he's hiding his pain."
