"Hey, Niall! How's it going?" Cassie greeted him as he entered the backseat of Harry's vehicle.

The three of them were attending a local beach bonfire that a mutual friend of theirs was hosting. Originally, Niall didn't want to attend but instead hoped that he could spend time with the twins and Aoife, however, Harry nonetheless managed to persuade him.

"Alright." Niall shrugged leisurely as he pulled a seatbelt across his body before looking up at the two people occupying the front seats. "What about you two?"

"Excited to have a night off. Life has been insane lately." Cassie answered, black sunglasses shielding her eyes while she stared at the road in front of her from the passenger seat.

You could say that again, Niall thought to himself. He was unable to suck himself out of his mind, sitting and listening to the rambling of both Harry and Cassie filling the car over the radio that blasted music which normally would've irritated him. But he was silent, it was the last thing on his mind, especially after the way he'd spent the last week.

However, he could get nothing past his best friend as the small talk came to a pause and he turned the radio off completely which caused Cassie to turn in her seat to look back at their friend in the backseat when her new husband couldn't but he did the talking. "Niall, is everything alright? You're never this quiet and we haven't talked lately. Normally I never have to convince you to go out especially when there's free drinks involved."

"Y-Yeah. Just exhausted. I've had a lot going on lately." Niall's statement wasn't a lie. He had been under stress from trying to move into his new house, while also navigating work and his personal life. He wanted time to slow down a little, but it was his reality and out of his control.

"Anything you want to talk about?" Cassie turned to look at the blonde.

He knew Aoife had entrusted him with the news of his parental role and he wasn't ready to announce the fact he was a shitty person and left his children to two of his closest friends so instead he shook his head. "Not really. I'm okay."

"You sure? I can tell something is bothering you." She pushed softly.

"Can we please drop the subject? I'm fine, and if I'm not I'll let you know." His voice grew a little irritated, feeling overwhelmed considering his own guilt.
