I stared at the two, bewildered.
Whatever was in that man's glass was making him loopy. Prophecies? Oh please.
"It's too much of a coincidence that you are new to camp with this birth date. But I must warn you, the oracle has always and only been consulted by demigods; I'm not sure how well it will react to Something not human."
My eyebrows shot up.
"I'm not." I had to swallow my words to keep from retching, licking my lips, "Human?"
"Oh, child. I thought you knew?"
Chiron's face turned grave, and his white hindquarters began to stamp their feet nervously.
My tongue felt dry and swollen in my mouth, and breathing was hard.
"Knew what?"
Even Mr. D seemed to be giving me a sympathetic look, which was a terrifying pair with his outfit.
"(Y/n), you're an Antígrafo."
Meaningless nonsense from a mythical mentor; what fun.
"What?"
Chiron sighed, and I could see the wrinkles forming on his forehead. This wasn't going to be an easy conversation. This man had seen all of his best heroes face hardships, and I could tell by his face that with each lost camper, a new wrinkle appeared.
"The name derives from the Greek word for reflecting. You're part of an ancient group of magics. Most of them were mortal but not human. Your hair and golden eyes indicate that you have Antígrafo blood in you. You can mirror your other half's looks," He paused, studying my face carefully.
"Other half?"
Chiron was about to answer, but Mr. D cut him off.
"You know how a metal detector searches for things in sand and beeps when found? That, my dear, would be you. When you've connected with your soulmate, your features will change to mirror those of the person your fates are attached to. Normally, you'll get one feature. A dapple of freckles or a hair type. Here, this book should tell you everything."
Great, so I was a metal detector.
My head started to spin, and I felt my eyes twitch; I didn't want to start crying, but I felt the tears. But honestly, I had no idea how to process it.
Imagine if you were walking home one day and some random stranger jumped out and yelled,
"Surprise! You're really a toaster!"
How would you react?
He swirled his cup as one might do with a glass of fine wine; I guess it must have been a habit. A red-bound book appeared in my hands, and I blinked back a couple of tears, staring at Seymour.
"So, my whole life has been a lie?" I mumbled.
"(Y/n), this is shocking news, but we must get back on track," Chiron said.
"Oh, right, sorry," I spit, rolling my eyes. "It's not like my life is coming crashing down," I hissed. I needed to walk, to move.
I grabbed my crutches and tried to pace, which was more of a hobble around the room.
"(Y/n)-"
"So everything wasn't real? My parents? Me just being (Y/n) Hale?"
"(Y/n), if you could just take a seat-"
"Is that why they sent me away? Did they know? Was I-" Something wrapped around me and pulled me into my chair.
"For Olympus's sake, sit down and listen, child."
Green vines with curly tendrils and broad leaves secured me to the chair. I looked to see Dionysus drink innocently out of his cup.
"No! It's my turn to ask the questions." I slammed my fists on the desk harder than I meant to and watched as a pen jumped and fell to the floor. Chiron didn't flinch, and I watched a smirk play across Dionysus's face as he drank.
Chiron cleared his throat, and Mr. D reluctantly let me go with a wave of his hand.
"Seems only fair."
"Okay," I hadn't expected them to listen to me, "One, why hasn't anyone told me I'm an anti-giraffe-o thingy-"
"Antígrafo," Chiron corrected, and I glared at him until he realized I wasn't done.
"Two or three days ago, I got this voice in my head telling me I needed to make my way to Camp Half-blood on Long Island to talk with you. Why? And finally, three, why do you have monsters guarding this place!?!"
We sat in silence for a second until he was sure I was done talking. I swiped furiously at the tears falling from my eyes.
"Excellent questions, child. No one has told you because, though I hate to say it, you're quite rare, (Y/n). The last Antígrafo was hunted down centuries ago. That's why I was so surprised to see you. Kings liked to collect them as prizes. It was a huge honour if one could convince the Antígrafo they were soulmates. No one told because, well, no one knew you existed."
He let me digest that for a second.
So I was not human and the last of my kind, which happened to be beeping soulmate detectors. I couldn't help but think of how cliché that was.
Mr. D nodded in agreement, but I wasn't sure who he was nodding at.
"Second of all, about the voice, I have no idea. Did it give you the coordinates straight here?" I nodded, remembering how the womanly voice repeated the words repeatedly in my head. 3.141 Farm road, Montuak.
Chiron seemed to be thinking but waved away whatever he would say.
"And finally, we don't have any guarding monsters here unless you count the cleaning harpies and Peleus, but he's no harm to campers. The monster came after you. Though I have no clue how you could see them through the mist."
"Mist?"
"Aren't you just full of questions?" Mr. D said. After Chiron filled me in, the two discussed whether I should have to watch some orientation video since I wasn't actually a demigod.
Mr. D won, deciding against it, and I was ushered to my feet.
"We'll take you to see Rachel later, but first, you should get settled into camp. You can stay here, if you like, in the room down the hall. Leo will show you around. Out now, child, Dionysus and I have much to discuss."
With that, the door opened, and I crutched my way out, feeling defeated.
