2023, 2 years ago. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

It had been several years since a once proud ship had been laid up in an American port following its return from Europe to remove harmful asbestos. It was once the pride of the USA, the flagship of the nation, the magnum opus of American shipbuilding, now just left to rust away with the threat of disposal inching towards her as the days go by. Aboard and keeping watch on the rusting hulk's main deck was a female figure with red and blue hair, a white shirt which had a blue star and a black skort, both of which were just as in poor condition as the ship she stood on. This was the KAN-SEN of the American passenger liner SS United States, 72 years old and once a ruler of the seas, the fastest ocean liner ever built and holder of the Blue Riband for 71 years, still unbeaten. Now, she believed that this year would be the last for her hull and be taken away for the last time, bound for the shipbreaker. Her country, her people, her government, they didn't care what became of her, but she's their ship. She's named after their country and she deserves a second chance but now, hope was fading away. She looked out over Philadelphia's night lights.

US: Might as well make the most of this view. One of these might the last time my hull sees this. (Catches a movement of flashlights in the corner of her eye on the pier below) Blasted kids, these days. When will they fucking learn?

She leaped down from the ship onto the pier to confront whoever this individual was. In her mind, United States thought it was a bunch of kids here to do some damage, as usual. What she didn't expect was two of "higher standing".

US: Hey! What are you doing?! This place is private proper... (Stutters upon seeing who it was, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and the KAN-SEN of the nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Nimitz, CVN-68)

SotN: Well, I didn't expect this for a welcome party.

Nimitz: Didn't need to be so rude, old timer.

US: I'm sorry, sir and madam. However, what are you two doing here, and at this time of night?

SotN: I'd guess you're the KAN-SEN of the ocean liner SS United States, right?

US: Former ocean liner. Me and my hull retired back in November 1969. Yous wanted me until yous sold me off 1978, scratching me off the register.

Nimitz: That's why we're here. We want you back in Eagle Union. We need someone of your size, your speed.

US: But look at my hull. I'm not in a perfect state and it'll cost the taxpayer way too much to even recondition me as a frontline naval vessel. I'm also stripped out of everything useful. I have no boiler, no turbines, no propellers, nothing.

SotN: Doesn't mean Newport News can't help. They did build you.

Nimitz: And me too.

US: But how would they help. Doubt they still have the plans in their archives. Besides, I'm 72 years old, way too old for naval service. I'm obsolete.
