Chapter 34
Inaya POV
5 years later...
I wasn't sure why I came racing back...
My nose scrunched as the dust particles were swept in, and I felt a sneeze coming on. I wouldn't say I have any recollections of this place; I didn't even spend a year in there. I only have one memory that will not leave me, no matter how far I run. For five years, I've traveled all over the place, fleeing nightmares, chasing dreams, and pursuing love. I can't say I was lucky when it comes to chasing love.
"Fuckkkk!" Aditi cursed exuberantly. I giggled as she struggled with the heavy box held by her small, dark-skinned arms.
She was a small jewel I discovered on my journey to find myself. Did I discover myself? No, not yet. I tried discovering it with someone, but they weren't right. I tried it alone and came racing back here. Right where I started.
"I told you I'll take it up. Give up pretending to be Superman." I addressed. My fingertips rubbed against the furniture, which was covered in dust, thick sneezing dust.
"Your fiancé is quite rich."
"Ex-fiance." I corrected beneath my breath.
"Mhmm."
Aditi and I are pals. My bestie. I forgot about everyone that this place had hold and I went out, and find her.
She was good enough. Nobody knows when I ran away, so no one could call and insist that I return and figure things out. I didn't want to work things out at the time, but now that I was back here, I wanted to. I was like a dog chasing its own tail out there. And now that I am back, no one knows.
"This is your house?" Her question, made me question if this was really my house too.
"Yep." I muttered as I gently strolled around. Even though it had been five years, I hoped to find some indication that she was still here. But with the dust, cobwebs, and haunting breeze, it appeared she hadn't come around. I began gently climbing the stairs. Only one way to know for sure.
"Do I get the master bedroom?" I know she requested as a joke, but after what occurred, I wasn't prepared to sleep in there. Simply gazing inside would be too much.
"Sure." I muttered. "Take the lighter stuff from the car, I'll help with heavier stuff later." I remarked, heading up the steps. The light from the window cast a lovely sheen on the hallway, accentuating the thick dust. All the doors were locked, but I wanted to unlock one to see for myself. As I approached the door, I couldn't help but feel emotional. I lost someone there who I had never even met. Something I had no idea existed. How could I blame myself for that?
As soon as I opened the door, I turned to face the bedside table and my eyes widened upon seeing the ring, but the letter has disappeared. I remained at the entrance, trying to grab for the ring. But, like a barrier, I was unable to move. I couldn't even breathe. I hurriedly locked the door and stormed down the steps to the car.
"You can surely get the master bedroom." I took a breath. I lift a box from the car seat. I just had a few outfits. Aditi, on the other hand, was surrounded by debris. She prefers to allude to her body cream company, which has not yet taken the market by storm.
"Did anyone die in the main bedroom?" She asked.
I failed to tell Aditi about my life, and she failed to tell me about hers. We were comfortable with not disclosing sentimental information that causes us to cry and mope. We cried once and promised to never do it again. If we do, we conceal it from one another. I was OK with it. Secrets tear you apart when you desire to discover them. I wasn't interested or engaged in learning about her pass, and neither was she.
"Okay, maybe someone did die. So the ghost and I will go to sleep together every night. I'm too broke to buy an apartment right now." I wasn't broke, as Karib; send me a million dollars once a year. I didn't know why she did it and I didn't care to pick up the phone and asked her.
I wasn't a big spender, so I was still managing.
Aditi picks up a box, and we both ascend the stairs. "The only person to die in that room was myself." I said. An exaggerated gasp escaped her mouth. "So, I'm speaking to a ghost."
"No, fool. I mean, I ended things with her in that room." Aditi knows as much about my life as I allow her know. I was taking it step by step, opening out to her.
We put the package on the floor. "I think we should clean this placed before we open these boxes." I responded, glancing around the vast house, which might take a week to clean.
I received a spotless house as an engagement present from Karib. However, if no one came in and cleaned for five years, this would be difficult.
"Yeah, we'll simply need to go into town tomorrow and get some cleaning supplies." She suggested. I didn't want to take a stroll around town just yet. But I couldn't have Aditi in town without knowing where to go.
"Um...we can make use of what we have." I replied as I walked down the hall to the washing room. But, seeing the empty shelves from the doorway, I didn't even bother to say anything else.
"In town, then."
"Can I ask you something?" She requested, as I come standing back in spot.
"Yeah?"
"Why come back? I saw the figures in your account. You could buy an entire island and stay there for the rest of your life. Of course, I'm on board." She said with a smirk.
I laughed. I can understand why she's a little jewel in my life. She makes me smile and laugh every day. Too bad she wasn't my type.
"Even if I purchased an island, I'd want to come back..." To her. "In the letter, I pledged to work everything out."
"With her?" In a suspicious tone, she inquired.
"I know, it sounds dumb." I promised to straighten things right with her after I healed that part of myself, which I had not yet done.
But I understood we were both broken, and maybe we needed each other to recover.
"Do don't get comfy." I said.
"Why?" She whispered.
"Because if things don't work out between her and me. I'm leaving again." If I don't see any progress in our mending, I'll have to move on. Allow me to be and discover love again. At least try to find love again.
"Don't worry. You're my tail. You followed me everywhere."
"As long as the island is our next stop, I'm OK." She said.
