Chapter 38
Inaya POV
In the cramped vehicle, I could sense the rage coming from her. I wanted to turn off the air and enjoy nature's air, but the look she gave me when I reached for for the switch said otherwise. I confessed that I spent over thirty minutes at the grocery, feeling cramped and uncomfortable. Somewhere in my explanation, she didn't think I could feel stuffy in such a wide space. She wasn't thrilled that we had to go two hours out of town to get food and cleaning supplies.
"I'm sorry. It's just that my anxiousness is reaching its pinnacle."
"I don't believe I understand, Inaya." She whispered coldly. I could sense, she was trying not to burst.
She wasn't one to bark or yell insults. However, we do have our fair share of silent disagreements, which hurts much more.
"We made a commitment, remember. When something is beyond our comprehension, we simply breathe and go on."
"Yeah, but when it means driving two hours out of town and coming back I need an explanation." She gritted.
"It's simply that I'm not sure. It's all confused in my brain." I sounded like Karib around five years ago. Now I see I needed to sort things out with her. If she ever wanted to. She was a wonderful person, and I know some girl, most likely with blonde hair and compassion, must have snatched her up.
"The facts can't be that muddled in your thoughts, Inaya." She stated as she pulled into the driveway at our house. I think it's our house now. On our lengthy ride over, I made it clear to her that whatever I had from here on out was hers as well, with the exception of Karib. "We all go through tough times. But if this place only brings back terrible memories and mojos, we can just go. We still have everything in a box."
"I will tell you when I am able to absorb everything." I muttered, pulling my seatbelt. "No running, okay... We'll stay here until we die, or at least until I'm certain I've sorted things out."
"I get what you mean. One foot in and one foot out. We've been doing it for quite some time."
"That's just life." I said, extending around to get the luggage, but she stopped me. "Don't worry, I'll bring them in." After all, you have a lot of cleaning to do on your own.
"Hmm, why?"
"Because I'll be getting a job."
"Seriously, I sent at least half a mill to your account. You don't need a job. Plus, I thought you were focusing on your body cream brand"
"To stay active in this town. Only the mall looked to have a lot to offer, and I'm going down there bright and early tomorrow."
Fuck
"How about you stay in this week."
"Nope. I'll spend the entire week with you, just hope I don't get hired."
I didn't want her fishing around at the mall for no apparent purpose. Aditi was an adult who had been caring for herself before I arrived. I simply needed someone to remain with me so I wouldn't lose my mind thinking about all the memories this place brings back.
"I hope you don't find a job."
"I might do." She said, exiting the car and went directly to the front door. I groaned and leaned backwards in my seat. This wasn't what I had in mind. What made her want a fucking job in such an unlikely spot?
The grocery and mall we were at just an hour earlier wasn't so bad.
As I pulled the door and stepped out of the car, I noticed someone on the opposite side of the street. I could feel their gaze on me, despite the distance. I looked up, flinching as I noticed the head of short curly black hair. I felt my breathing quicken as I remained stuck to the spot, staring at her.
Her hands were in her jeans pockets as her head slanted to one side. I knew that Divya had told her, and before I knew it, every one of my family would be at my door, either tomorrow or later today.
I wasn't quite ready to face them.
Given the sardonic expression on her face, I was able to surmise with some luck that it was Karib. My feet slid off the curb and onto the pavement as I took a deep breath and moved ahead. She shook her head and slowly backed away. She looked to be terrified of something, just like I was.
"No stop!" I murmured under my breath, but I made no attempt to make another move toward her. I was itching to reach out, but not quite yet. I could feel it in my bones: I wasn't ready to face anything yet. And returning might be a bad idea.
She climbed into her car and drove away down the road.
A deep sigh passed through my nasal tube as I turned to see Aditi walk out the door.
