Chapter 37

Karib POV

I traversed the mostly empty aisle with my stock book, since I had to inspect every single can product, the majority of which will expire within the next month or so. It appeared that the most can food bought was during the peak season of storms and disasters, which was a whimper, as those days seem like years ago. I couldn't remember the last time we experienced a flood.

"Karib." Divya's voice rang in my ears. I didn't gave her a glance, I didn't want her to be stuttering mess. I grinned, keeping my attention on the cans.

"Yes, Kido."

"I want to talk to you about something."

"Ok." I remarked, grabbing a can of fish in tomato sauce and checking the expiration date. I dumped it into the cart, which was nearly full with other outdated food.

"It can either be really good or really bad." She was apprehensive even before I looked at her, based just on her tone.

"Mmm...what might that be, darling?" After Inaya left, I assumed everyone would ignore me because it was my responsibility she lost the baby; nevertheless, I did not reveal the major reason or the cause. But I was relieved to find that they did not despise me for being the cause of her leaving. Instead, they surrounded me.

Just two years ago, Divya and Fatima arrived seeking for work. It's the least I could do, and in their two years of employment, they've done an outstanding job, from cashier to making a few personal filings for me.

"What news will you give to me first, Little Divya? The good or..."

"Uhm...there is only one piece of news. I'm simply not sure which category it comes under."

I chuckled as I pulled the big trolley towards me. "Well, just so you know, nothing you do will get you fired or your pay cut, so feel free to tell me what you did wrong."

"I didn't do anything wrong."

"Did Fatima or Mathew do anything wrong?" I mostly see the three of them hanging around at the staff cafeteria. They appear to be three mischievous friends.

"Well," I said, finally gazing at her. Her head fell to the floor, like hot potatoes. She, along with the other girls, claimed I was scary. My state, that is. Most of the time, when I'm dressed normally and just strolling about without taking charge, I look ridiculous. Well, while I was around, I don't play boss; I wasn't sure how Sid handled everyone, and I was too terrified to inquire.

"She is here in town. I saw her today, you know. I believed I saw a ghost at first, but you know what happened when my hand made direct touch with her? It was fucking her. She's still quite attractive, and she..."

"You aren't making any sense, Darling. Who is she?" I grumbled as I picked out various brands of canned sausages and tossed them on the cart. I was staring at roughly $50,000 or more in expired canned items. I would not advise my worst enemy to run a mall and supermarket. It's just terrible. Everything must be discarded. Many people suggested donating it to the needy, but I dislike giving the worst to the poor.

In the back of my mind, Sid was saying something different.

"Inaya." She whispered.

"Who?" I chuckled. I was attempting to regulate my emotions. Every time I hear her name, I get all worked up and want to escape, letting Sid to take charge.

"Inaya. I saw her in aisle 4. The cleaning products aisle. She..."

"When was this?"

"Today."

Where had I been today? I was here at the store. I scowled at her. "And you didn't call to inform me."

"That's where the bad news may come in."

What could be wrong about seeing her. My brows narrowed; was she yanking my strings? "Very funny. You, Fatima, and Mathew truly like twisting my strings." I gritted. Inaya was not coming back.

The only way I could keep connected was by giving money to her every year. That's the least I could do.

"No strings. Go see for yourself. Or not. She's upset at all of us."

"That is not Inaya. She wouldn't be angry with you." I know she would be incredibly mad with me, but no one else. "You were there for her in the final days. Remember."

"I understand, but I'm not sure what went wrong." "You would be the first to know." She stated this while gazing at, or rather through, me. She immediately averted her gaze in response to my scowl. I kept the secrets for so long that I cause her to lose the pregnancy.

Well, Sid did that and Sid is a part of me, therefore it boils down to me being the cause.

"Nothing happened. She left a letter behind, and I tell you everything, just as you told me all you knew." I didn't tell her anything I knew about why Inaya actually left.

"I need to go see for myself." I murmured and handed her the stack book. "I finished this up."

"Are you insane? She'll know I told you."

"Good. I need to talk to her."

"You can't simply walk in on her and demand a talk. Let her breathe." Divya exclaimed as she gripped onto my shirt.

"She breathed enough. Five years." I gritted. Making a gentle attempt to remove her hands. With my emotions heightened, I could feel myself sinking.

"Please let me go see her."

"No. Stay still here; perhaps she will come to you in due time. If you go in your current state, you could scare her away."

"But I need to see her." I let out a hiss. "If you claim..."

"Just stay put."
