Chapter six.
After school Nick had tech club, so I began walking home. I was walking down the school road when a black car parked next to me. The window rolled down and Adam said “Want a lift?” I got into the car and looked at him, taking in the face that never seemed to stop my heart from accelerating.
“Is this your car?” He nodded as I did my seat belt.
“My uncle brought it for me.” I nodded unsure of what to think of Adam. The car looked expensive and so I couldn’t help but wonder whether he was rich or a thief or something even worse. As if he heard my thoughts Adam said “I work for him every now and then. We work in…” He stopped for a second. In hind sight I should have paid more attention to it but at the time I was too caught up in the moment. “…the business of helping people.” He didn’t expand, I wish he had. We drove, mindlessly chatting about nothing and everything, and went straight past my house. I looked at Adam wondering if he would reverse. When he didn’t, I began to panic.
“Where are you taking me?” I demanded. He looked at me; I saw confusion in his eyes. When he didn’t answer my heart pounded against my chest, not in a good way, my mind jumped to the most horrid conclusions.
“Please don’t hurt me.” My voice was frail and weak. Truthfully I didn’t believe he would hurt me, but at the time I didn’t know what to think. Immediately after I had spoken he braked. I almost went flying forwards but my seat belt restricted me. He didn’t even shift. He looked at me, his eyes full of anger and disgust with a tinge of something red that I had never seen before.
“I would never hurt you.” He said his voice sure and sincere. I felt disgusted at myself. I didn’t know why, but I did. He relaxed; it was then that I noticed we were parked by the side of the road in front of a park, hardly a malevolent place.
“Have you checked your phone?” He said his head against the window. I grabbed my phone and saw the new text- it was from Adam. ‘I’ve got a surprise for you. I’ll pick you up after psychology.’
“Oh, I’m sorry.” He ignored my apology and put his hands of the sides of my face forcing me to stare into his eyes and see the truth.
“I would never hurt you.” He repeated, his voice was soft but powerful and it made my very core melt into nothing. I felt his warm breath against my face. His lips so close to mine that I if took a breath we would be kissing. Then he exited the car.
He led me into a park. He led me over hills of glorious green strands of grass, brushing against my sensitive skin of my legs. We walked towards what seemed like the end of the park. I could see something in the distance. When I got there I saw the surprise. I sat on the cloth and looked around in amazement. The food was my favourite. It was a wonder how he knew, but I didn’t care. The flower beds on either side of us were perfect, full of the most glorious flowers. We were surrounded by what I can best describe as a sea of my favourite flowers, daisies and tulips.
“No roses?” I said jokingly. He approached me and touched my cheek. As the electricity surged under my skin I saw that he felt it too. His voice was quiet when he said “There’s only space for one rose here.” He leaned forward and finally took what I had wanted him to. It was a chaste kiss but there was so much in it; our burning passion, our infinite love, our hearts. When he leaned away we were both breathing quickly. I wanted to pull him to me but he retreated and got a plate out from somewhere. He handed me the plate of food and we ate until my phone rang.
I answered it and was greeted with an angry voice on the other end.
“Where are you? You had me so worried.”
