The next day at training, Asher and I trained with the other careers. Mainly we laughed at the smaller tributes who couldn't do anything. Well, they laughed. I smiled, and pretended. On the inside, I felt bad for the kids that would most likely be slaughtered. The two from twelve are pathetic. They are both fifteen, but can barely hold a sword. At one point I nudge Asher and whisper for him to go help them, but he says that we have to keep our reputation. Hatred begins to fill my body as I watch the other careers laugh. Asher is fake laughing. I can tell.
The two kids from Eleven are staring in our direction, whispering to each other slightly. They are both wide built, with extra muscle. The girl has blonde hair, and the boy has dark skin. They are standing rather close.
The two from Five that we saw yesterday are standing with them. I have to say, he's pretty attractive. But I can tell by the way he's looking at us, he hates us and that would pretty much ruin any relationship.
"Do you want to go throw some knifes?" Asher asks me. I shake my head no and watch the four kids stare at us hatefully. It hurts me that people don't like me. That's just always been a pet peeve of mine.
"I think I'm just going to go to rope tying." I say, watching the four of them head in that direction.
"Cool. I'll come with you." He says and I snap my arm out in front of him.
"No, really, it's okay. I'll go myself. Plus, I know you want to go to the swords." I say, seeing him eyeing it.
"Okay. I'll catch up with you later." He says and I walk over to the rope tying station, which doesn't have a leader, just a board with instructions.
As I get closer, the four of them notice me and turn away, not making eye contact. I walk up to a table where a rope is and I see the touch screen showing all the ways to tie the best ropes.
"Why aren't you with your ruthless entourage?" The dark skinned boy asked me. I look up at him, and see the other heads turned towards me as well.
"I just needed to get some space." I say, going back to my rope.
"Are they annoying to you?" The boy from Five asks.
"They can be sometimes. And they're jerks to everyone."
"You're not like that?" The girl from Five asks.
"I might be a career, but there's no point in acting like a maniac and enjoy killing."
The four of them look to each other, impressed.
"I'm Elize." The tall girl from Eleven says.
"Ariston." I say, shaking her hand.
"I'm Demarcus." The boy from Eleven says. I nod.
"I'm Misty, and this is Elian." The girl from Five says. Elian doesn't say much. He just gives me the same look. Hatred and disgust together.
"Is it okay if I hang out with you guys for today? I mean I need to get away from the psychos." I say, looking back to my allies, who are all looking at me now. Asher looks confused. Everyone else looks at me the same was Elian's looking at me.
"Yeah that's okay. We wouldn't want to be with them anyways." Demarcus says. I look away from my group and smile.
"I saw you throwing those knifes yesterday. You were really good. We could use some of that skill." Elize says.
"Are you asking me to be allies?" I ask them.
"If you're up for it." Misty says.
"Defiantly! But we're going to have to keep it a secret. The other careers can't know about this." I say and they all nod.
"I'll spend my time in the arena with the careers, but I won't let them kill any of you. And if anything happens with my alliance with the careers, I'll come to you. If that's okay.." I trail off, mainly looking at Elian. He keeps the same expression, and I look away quickly, feeling uncomfortable.
"Yeah, that will work."
*********
After dinner I go back to the roof, but people are already there. It's Elian and Demarcus. I am about to just walk up to them, but they don't see the elevator come up, or see me. So I think quickly, and hide behind a wall that's to the left of the elevator. It's not very wide, but big enough to hide me.
I lean closer to hear what they're saying.
"How could you just let her in like that?" Elian asks harshly.
"She's good with her knifes and we need her to protect Sampson. We already said he could join us." Demarcus replies.
Sampson? Who is Sampson?
"I know but I can do that! You probably just put him in more danger!" He says. I have a feeling they're talking about me, but I'm not going to let it bother me. Demarcus and everyone else likes me. Elian doesn't have a say in this at this point. I'm already in.
"Elian, we need her. You're just going to have to except that." Demarcus says, and I hear footsteps walk towards the elevator. It dings and then slides down. I peer around the corner and see Elian leaning over the cement railing. I step out and stand behind him.
"You're not going to jump, are you?" I ask. He spins quickly and looks at me.
"Oh, no." He says and turns back around. I walk up next to him and cross my arms, leaning against the railing.
"Did you hear that whole conversation?" He asks, not looking at me.
"Only the part where you said you didn't trust me." I say as look at his jawline, which is pretty impressive.
"How am I supposed to trust a career?" He asks, hatred lingering in his voice.
"Because I'm not like the others."
"All careers are the same."
"How could you be so stereotypical?" I ask, straightening my body up. He stand up too, looking at me for the first time tonight. "You've seen the past careers, so you think that we're all like that."
He doesn't answer for a while. He just stands there. He doesn't have much of an expression on his face. More like one that I can't read. It's a mix of hatred, disappointment, and sorrow.
"You're right. I'm sorry." He answers finally. I lean back against the railing and sigh.
"Who's Sampson?" I ask him.
"He's the twelve year old from Seven. The girl he came with has a mental disorder, so the capital is switching her with an Avox and making her step off the platform early. The original is being sent back home. But Sampson needs someone to protect him, so Demarcus chose you. I mean you don't have too, but it's if you want to."
"No it's okay, I want to." I say and smile. He smiles back. This is the first time he hasn't looked at me like he hates me.
"Alright, well we have private training tomorrow . I'll see you then." He says and I nod. As he pulls back, our hands touch slightly and I think I see his face turn red. I feel heat seek into my face, and I hope it's not noticeable.
"Goodnight." I say as we step onto the elevators. He gets off first and I step of when it gets to my floor. A constant smile lingers on my face as I remember our hands touching on the roof, and the warmness I felt. I open the door to my room and curl up under the blankets, letting the warmness replace the one that's still there.
