I'm in 9th grade and I still haven't had a school dance. The spring formal is coming up and I have no idea what to do. How are you supposed to ask girls to be your date when they all just hang out in groups and gossip (hp reference)
I'm not even sure if I want to go with any of the girls. It's all so confusing! The first bell rings and I take my seat in math. I hate this place. I wanna drop out. My best friend, Luke takes his usual seat next to me with a smile on his face.
"Why are you so happy?" I asked grumpily.
"Oh nothing much. It's just that Ashley Thompson just asked me to go to the spring formal with her." He says nonchalantly.
I look at him with a shocked look on my face. "Sexiest freshman Ashley asked you out?" I ask.
"Yup." He smiles at me.
I don't know why I'm so surprised. Everyone thinks Luke is the hottest guy on the planet. I won't say he's not. I just get a bit jealous sometimes. Everyone's always all over him and they all act like they know him but they don't know him like I do. He's my best friend after all.
"How is it that you have girls crawling after you asking you to be their date, and I can't even seem to get one to look at me and give a chance to ask?" I groan miserably, putting my head on my desk.
"Wait. You still don't have a date?" He asks surprised. I don't know why he's so surprised.
"No. Don't rub it in." I mumble.
"Aww Cal, you know I would never do that." He says softly almost offended.
"I'll go with you instead." He offers.
"No it's fine. I'm not letting you give up a date with Ashley. I know you think she's hot. Have fun. I probably won't go." I say glumly.
Luke goes to say something else, but the bell rings and the teacher calls for our attention.

The next couple of days absolutely suck. Everyone keeps talking about the formal and their dresses and tuxes and I'm the only one not going.
I hear a knock on my bedroom door.
"Come in!" I yell. My mom enters with a little smile on her face. "Hey baby. I know it's not much, but I heard about the formal tomorrow and I wanted you to look nice." She says while holding up a dark blue button up and a pair of black slacks. There's even a little bow tie.I smile at them but my smile quickly faded. I shake my head. "Thanks mom that's really sweet of you but, I'm not going." I tel her sadly.
She puts the clothes down and sits next to me on my bed. "Aww baby, why not?" She asks. "Isn't Luke going?"
I sigh before saying, "Yeah Luke is going, but he has a date and I don't." I say miserably.
"Just go stag. You'll still have fun!" She insists.
"With everyone around me having dates? I don't think so." I shut down her idea.
"But Cal I'm sure you could ask Susie from across the street."
"Nope. Even Susie has a date."
"Well how about-"
"Mom, just stop. I'm not going okay? The suit was thoughtful but I'm just not going. Now drop it!" I say, starting to get irritated.
"Alright then. I'll call you when dinner is ready." She says before leaving my room. I sigh heavily and moan into my pillow.

The next day I walk into school irritated about everything. The formal is tonight and I'm not ready for all the gossiping and conversations about tonight.
