I woke up from my restful slumber, the warmth of the covers wrapping me as I stretched my limbs. As I moved, my eyes unconsciously flicked over my shoulder, and I froze. There, seated on my bed, was a raven-haired man. My heart skipped a beat. I quickly turned to face him, my cheeks burning as I realized how close he was—too close. His presence was both comforting and overwhelming. He was writing in a small, sleek leather book, his focused expression softening the sharpness of his usual demeanor.
"Good afternoon, Rin!" he said, his voice smooth and light, but there was an underlying warmth that made my pulse quicken.
"Afternoon...?" I stammered, my voice betraying my confusion and the lingering haze of sleep.
He chuckled, the sound low and reassuring, yet it made the tension in my chest tighten. "Yes, afternoon. You've been asleep for the past two days," he explained, holding up two fingers, his eyes sparkling with a mixture of amusement and something softer—affection, perhaps?
"W-what?!" My heart raced in my chest, a mixture of shock and panic flooded my veins. The idea of losing two whole days felt like I was waking from a dream that I couldn't quite grasp.
Without a second thought, he set his book down on the nightstand with a soft thud, and in one smooth motion, his hand found my shoulder. It wasn't rough—no, it was gentle, almost careful—but there was an undeniable strength in the way he guided me back down onto the bed. His touch was warm, grounding me in the moment, though it only made my heart flutter even more.
"You hungry?" His soft, caring eyes met mine, the warmth in his gaze drawing me in.
"Y-yeah," the word slipped out before I could even process the question. My stomach had been empty for far too long.
"Well, you're in luck—Konan made dinner today." Obito said, his voice bright with enthusiasm.
Without waiting for a response, he hopped off the bed and went over to the fridge. Moments later, he returned, practically shoving a bowl of stir-fry into my face with a grin that was a bit too playful.
I couldn't help but laugh at his antics, my heart lifting in the process.
I couldn't help but try and disregard what my life has been up till this point—this was so wholesome, so new to me, that I just wanted to fit in.
Taking the bowl from him, I began eating, savoring the flavors that rushed across my taste buds. The food was warm, comforting, and so full of flavor that I couldn't help but let out a small sigh of satisfaction.
"She's a good cook!" I exclaimed, looking at the heaping portion in front of me. "But, why did you give me so much?" I asked, my brow furrowing slightly in confusion.
He shrugged, his voice surprisingly serious now. "Well, for starters, you haven't eaten in two days. And secondly, you need to start eating to build up your strength." His tone softened as he continued, his eyes meeting mine. "I assume Danzo starved you and drained you of your appetite. You should change that, it's not healthy for you."
Obito set a bottle of water down beside me with a purposeful click, his gaze lingering on me for a moment longer than usual.
He suddenly turned away, a hint of pink creeping onto his cheeks, as if he could sense my stare. "Well then!" he said quickly, clearing his throat as he straightened up. "While you eat, I've got a meeting to attend to. I'll be back shortly. Remember, don't go out alone, and there's more food in the fridge if you need anything! I'll be quick!"
With that, he grabbed a mask hanging from the wall and hurried out of the room, the soft thud of the door closing behind him leaving me in a quiet, almost peaceful stillness.
