My phone rings. I look down and see it's dad calling but I don't answer it and I send it straight to voicemail. And then he's got to message me! Of course he does. I look at my phone and say what I usually say whenever I'm about to be up Shit's Creek, "Shiznatch."

Dad - Where the hell are you? I know you sent me to voicemail!

"You okay?" Travis asks. He's busy grabbing an order from the Wendy's drive-thru window.

"Yeah, let me handle this." I quickly text a response.

Brittney - Dad. I'm fine. I'm just out with friends.

Dad - What friends? Annabelle is at home. I should know because I just dropped her mom off.

Brittney - I'm out on a date.

As soon as I type it out it just sounds plain strange coming from me. Me? On a date? It's been forever since I dated Donny. Even then dad had major issues.

Dad - You didn't get back with Donny did you?

I can't believe dad is being so nosy. I was hoping he'd be so far up Katy's you-know-what he wouldn't give a damn about what I'm up to. A girl can wish I guess.

Brittney - Ew! No way I wouldn't dare give him another chance. He's a lying cheating scum bag.

Dad - Good. Well who is this new guy? I want to meet him! Whoever he is.

Brittney - Dad it's just our second date. Maybe. One day if we even get to a third date.

Dad - It had better be soon! No boy is going out with my Honey Bunches without a meet and greet.

I immediately click the screen off and put the phone in my pocket. It vibrates again with another message but I'm not going to dare check it. I'm not ruining my date with thoughts of my dad.

"Parents?" Travis asks.

I nod. "How'd you know?"

"The look on your face just screams parental controls just got locked in." Travis hands me the warm bag of food. The smell of fries makes my mouth water.

"Is it the look of OH SHIT?"

He laughs but I'm being totally serious. We drive down a couple streets before he pulls up to the familiar dead-end on 12th street where we'd been at before. I spot the sand dunes leading out onto the beach. "Here we are."

"Great, I'm starving."

"That face you made...I think my little sister gets it whenever I ask her about one of her dates."

"Wait. You. The Travis McDurn have a sister?"

"Uh, yeah. Isn't that what I said?"

"Hold the fucking phone. You have a female relation? Wow."

"You just love saying my name don't you? Besides, how else do I know women so well?" He laughs, harder this time, but I'm not sure if I think it's all that funny. I never thought of Travis getting along with any woman.

"Oh yeah, you really read 'em real good."

He puts the truck in park and snags the food bag before I can even reach for my first fry. "Hey! Get back here!"

He jumps out, shuts his door and heads to the back of the truck. I jump out and meet up with him as he drops the back gate down and pulls a blanket out from the back. I look up at him and his concerned eyes stare down at me. "You can tell your dad I'll have you home soon."

"Don't worry about him." I step closer and place my hand on his waist. "Worry more about me tonight."

"Oh yeah?" He's got a sparkle in his eyes at the thought my words might mean. I lean closer and snatch the bag of food and make dash for the beach.
