Annabelle is already with Carlos and apparently Bernie is tagging along with them so Travis had to pick me up. I guess it was just meant to be.

"You okay?" He asks me as I pull myself up into the truck.

"Are you?" I eye him with concern.

"Why wouldn't I be?"

"After that little chit chat with my dad you look frightened half to death. I didn't think anything in the world could frighten Travis McDurn."

I knew dad would give him a good talking to about bringing me back before midnight. I guess because my dress would turn back into rags, if I were wearing one, I mean. But Beverley's party is going to be anything but a ball so I'm wearing a bikini under a pair of shorts and a loose top.

"He is kinda scary," Travis grabs his own hand and rubs his thumb into his palm. "His handshake is crippling."

"I think it's just dad trying to be super macho."

"He's something that's for sure. So, you think we can sneak into this party without everyone looking at us?"

"Why would anyone be watching us?"

"We're the talk of Oceanside High this week. After that smack you gave me...have you seen the memes?"

"Yeah." I muffle a laugh and bite down on my lip before finally saying: "I have. Sorry."

"It's okay. I guess you were right about how other people at Oceanside would take our coupling. It's caused a big fucking stir of controversy. It's hard not to notice you and me, together."

He's right. It's also hard not to attract attention when you're Travis McDurn with his handsome face, his tall hard body, and his gorgeous but steely green eyes. But also it doesn't help that his truck runs louder than a gas generator on premium. I should know because my mom and I used to live in a single-wide trailer after she cheated on dad and took me with her. This was also before dad had made his Chef's Up company and his catering business into a success. Back in those days we'd wake up to find out the electric was cut off and I'd have to start up the generator with three tugs of the pull-cord. She's always felt guilty about life after leaving dad and taking me with her. I guess that's why she's okay with me being with dad these days.

Before we get to Beverly Ludkins birthday party he parks several houses away. I'm glad it's only about the fact his truck can't fit into a tight spot and not so no one sees us together. We aren't each other's secret, not anymore.

I walk in through the front door and squeeze through the bodies jostling to the thumping music. I see Annabelle sitting on Carlos' lap. "Hey!" She yells to me and waves us over. She snakes her arm back around Carlos' neck and she's got a beer in her other hand. "What's up? Need a drink?" She sees Travis squeezing through people behind me, my hand in his as I lead the way and I can see that her face struggles to keep a smile. She does a good job at it.

"I'll have one." I say.

"Hey bro!" Carlos says to Travis. "I'd say have a seat but this place is packed. "What took you all so long?"

"My dad."

"Oh god. Parents. Who needs 'em." He rolls his eyes with a laugh and guzzles his beer then lays his head on one of Annabelle's tits. She smirks and rubs his hair, making it messy.

"Carlos, baby. Let me go."

"Mmm I like it here." He nuzzles his head again against her tit. She shoves him back against the couch and stands up.

"Well I've got to take care of Britt!" She grabs my arm. "Come on. I'll show you where the drinks are flowing." She stops and looks at Travis. I hold my breath. "Do you need one too?"
