"Nuh-uh. No. Not even funny, Rose," Brittney said.
"Why not?" I whined, "Please, Brittney. I need to go and you can help. Just distract the guards. You owe me. Remember the graphorn? How I saved you? Remember the life debt? Come on."
She sighed, "Ok, fine. Just to get you to go away. It's the middle of the night for God's sake. Lemme go back to sleep."
"Yes!"
I hopped around the room in glee.
"One more thing; you have to do it tomorrow. Do it right after breakfast. Go over to the other side of the lake and distract them."
"Okay..." she groaned, "go away..."
"Bye then. see you tomorrow!"
The next morning we waited in suspense. We watched the compound. Suddenly the kids came rushing out of the cafeteria, signaling that breakfast was over. I looked for Brittney and her friends. When I spotted them I saw that Brittney had positioned her hand so the teachers couldn't see it and was giving the forest a thumbs up. I smiled. That was for us, telling us that she was ready to go. I turned to Ash and Gerry.
"Let's go. She's ready."
We got up and crawled back to a more covered area. Then ran over to the forbidden side of the lake. Hiding in the bushes we waited for Brittney to go.
She suddenly jumped out of the bushes at the two guards.
"Help!" She yelled, "Help! I saw I saw a-an Ashwinder! I hate snakes! Get rid of it, please!"
Both guards rushed forward into the bushes.
Ash turned to me, "She's good."
"And they're stupid," Gerry added.
I nodded and moved forward towards the entrance to the loading bay. Ash and Gerry followed.
Right after we crossed the threshold an alarm went off. How could I be so stupid? Of course they have an alarm system to tell if someone crosses the threshold! I looked around for a hiding spot and saw some large bushes off to the side. I dove for them, followed by my boys and ducked down just in time to avoid getting spot.
"Phew!" I said.
"Shhh!" Both boys said.
"Sorry."
"Shhh!"
"Ok," I mouthed to them and rolled my eyes. Then I turned to watch what would happen next.
We sat there for hours as they searched the area for intruders. It felt like every rock was trying to kill me. When they finally decided that it had to be an animal because they couldn't find any intruders, we gave a silent cheer. It had been almost the whole day they spent searching.
I bent over to get up when they left and my hand hit something. I picked it up and looked at it. It was a locket with angel wings shaped in a heart. I turned it around and looked at the back. I squinted, there was something written on the back. I turned to Ash.
"Can you read this?"
"Uh, it says..." He turned to Gerry, "Can you read this?"
Gerry took it and looked closely, "I think it says 'Sweet 16,' but I'm not sure."
"Here try this."
I took the locket back and preformed a clean spell to get rid of all the rust. It had obviously been there a long time. Then I gave it back.
"That's better. It does say 'Sweet 16.' Huh. That could either be a very cool coincidence or someone knows we're here." Gerry looked around nervously.
"I doubt that someone knows we're here. I think it's just a coincidence. You saw the rust. I'll put it right next to my other locket." I pulled the locket out of my shirt, unclipped it and slid the new locket next to my old one.
I picked up the one I had and tried to open it again. I pulled and it stayed closed fast. I tried opening it with magic, but that didn't work either. Hmm...I thought for sure that my magic would open it.
Ash broke me out of my thoughts, "Come on. We need to get going."
"You're right. Let's go."
We moved forward out of the bushes in the cover of darkness. I scouted ahead. We walked on and on and on and on and found nothing.
I was starting to believe that there was no loading bay. Then suddenly I stumbled through some very thick trees into a clearing. I saw people moving around crates. More adults I had ever seen.
Then a hand came out from behind me and dragged me back into cover. I turned around to thank Ash because Gerry isn't that strong and came face first into Rex.
