Chapter 6

Spencer Reid

Then:

After my early morning phone call from Saylor, I quickly gathered all paperwork that I would need to allow her into the building. Was my intention to help the case? Sure was. Was it also my intention to see her, test my theory on what I think happened to my body when I saw her... absolutely yes. I was a human experiment, and I was testing theories that could describe and explain away what I was feeling when I looked at her... when I grazed her hand.

I was running on fumes, less than three hours of sleep. Never once getting into REM. It meant that my body wasn't functioning to the level I needed it too. I needed sugar and the way to get that was by getting coffee.

Powering through the early hours before anyone else entered the office allowed me the time to get that paperwork done and on Aaron Hotchners desk for his approval as soon as he steps in his office.

I could tell the lack of sleep made me feel more nervous. As if I wasn't thinking 100% clearly.

The morning briefing went as it usually does – there was no updates about Logan as of right now. Hopefully with Saylor coming in later today, it would aid in a breakthrough of the case.

"Dr. Reid, can I speak with you a moment." Hotchner says to me. Directing me out of the conference room and into the hallway. The rest of the team did as they usually did. Morgan was getting coffee at the coffee cart in the room. Jason Gideon was standing with JJ going over the different perspectives and how to possibly adapt the profile to the media. It all felt so natural to see them like this.

I closed the door behind me as I exited the room.

"I signed the papers for Saylor. She will get a temporary and restricted access badge. It will be able to be used to the entirety of the case." I nod as he speaks.

"Thank you, Hotch." I smiled and turned to walk away.

"Hey Reid." He says as I slowly take my hand off the handle of the door. Turning around to face him.

"Saylor will be your responsibility. Have you read her file?" He looks at me quizzically.

"I have. Three times."

"Of course, you did." He laughs. I smirk because it was in my nature to do so.

"Just keep an eye on her. She might be of more use to us than we initially thought." He says as he walks to his office. The signed papers in my hand felt like the beginning of the end of Logan. Allowing her in this office gave her the chance to tap in on skills she has and assist us in catching a killer. Not to mention it can keep her safe and that alone made me feel comfort.

My heart rate was slow, I knew that it was getting to the wire of getting Saylor here. I would leave to meet her soon and I was nervous that my energy was not going to recover.

"Kid, what's wrong?" Rossi squeezed my shoulder, grabbing my attention. I shake my head, looking at him intently. Rubbing my eyes and squinting under the bright lights, I thought for a second about the way I was feeling.

"Saylor Watts is coming to the office today. I am leaving here soon to meet her. She is going to help us with the case and talk about any detail she may have missed. With her and Logan being together since high school, she assumed that there was more that she wasn't thinking about. Plus, I haven't slept." He smirked, pulling his hand off my shoulder and taking a step back.

"Don't worry. It will all be okay. I think you'll wake up when you start to discuss the case, you always do." He turns and walks out of the room.

"I need more than one coffee." I said to myself. Sitting at my desk, allowing my head to fall into the hard and cold wood. I felt jittery with fear, lack of energy, and the excitement of seeing Saylor. I run my hands over my face and go back to my thoughts about Saylor. Running through my mental check list of all the things I needed to pay attention to.
