. chapter one
"The future: a dark, desolate world. A world at war. Suffering, loss on both sides. Mutants, and the humans who dare to help them. Fighting an enemy we cannot defeat. Are we destined on this path? Destined to destroy ourselves like so many species before us? Or can we evolve fast enough to change ourselves? Change our fate? Is the future truly set?"
1972 .
August walked briskly down the sidewalk, pushing passed people that got in front of her. Her boot-clad feet clicked as she walked, and her bell-bottoms rustled. The fashions nowadays were more revealing than she was used to during the sixties. It was an odd and drastic change.
Just a few months ago, she stumbled upon her mutation once again. August was in wonder, but knew not to misuse the gift. She practiced, and discovered news that was harder to believe than aliens roaming the planet. Such a discovery led her to this mission, on this very day, in the very building August stood in front of now.
She barged in, quickly climbing the staircase. Just a few steps in front of her, were three men. August climbed faster and harder in order to reach them, being as quiet as she could, which was close to completely silent.
Coming up to the first man, she lifted her right hand and pressed her fingers into the pressure point in his neck, knocking him out cold. August caught him as he slipped to the side. She set him against the wall and pursued the two remaining men.
Doing the same actions with them, she successfully completed step one of her plan. She felt the last man's pockets for his car keys, finally finding them in his front right pocket.
August continued up the stairs, coming up to a long corridor full of doors, though she knew exactly the one she needed to go to.
Opening the door, she wasn't surprised to find a half naked man looking around the room in confusion, his back faced to her.
"Logan," August called out, causing the man to turn around quickly in alarm.
"Who are you?" Logan asked. "How do you know my name?"
"Kind of a long story," August shrugged. "All you need to know right now is that you have to come with me."
Logan eyed the woman with suspicion, snatching up a button-up shirt to slip on. As he buttoned the shirt, he asked, "and why would I need to go with you?"
"Because you know Charles Xavier," August answered simply.
Logan's hands stopped at the last three buttons, staring at her in astonishment and confusion.
"You mean, the Professor? What do you want with him?"
August looked away, her eyebrows scrunching up at the familiar name. She couldn't remember for the life of her why it sounded so significant, and it nearly drove her mad every single day.
"If his name is Charles, then yes," she nodded, looking back up at him.
"I'd love to help, really, I would, but I don't think-"
"He erased my memories, Logan," August interrupted. "No matter how hard I try I can't find him in my head, but I know he's been there. I know that I used to love him, but I can't remember what he looked like or what he sounded like or why I fell in love with him at all. You're the only one that can get me to him, Logan. You're my only and last chance. I've seen the future, and I don't want to live in that kind of world knowing that I don't remember the happiest days of my life. I'm begging you, Logan, please."
Logan grumbled incoherent words under his breath, sighing as he stared into August's pleading eyes.
"Okay, fine," he caved. "But I need a source of transportation."
August threw him the keys. "Already covered."
"Let's get this over with."
