WALKING INTO HAWKINS HIGH with a sage green messenger bag strung over her shoulder, Valentina was not thrilled to be back in school after the weekend she had.

Rubbing the excess mascara remnants from under her dark blue eyes—leftover from last night's adventures with Carol—she wished she was anywhere else but this dreaded prison filled with unwashed boys and washed-up girls.

The blonde made her way to her locker, which was situated around the corner from the main entrance between two other lockers she had not seen opened once this year. She pulled a mascara wand out of the front pocket of her bag and dropped the accessory to the floor by her black Converse, pumping the wand in and out of the tube a couple times before applying it in front of the mirror stuck onto the inside of her locker.

Bang!

Laughter filled the air as Valentina's best friends, Carol and Tina, slammed her locker shut and continued to cackle in front of it.

"Jeez, I almost poked my eye out!" Val yelled, disregarding the students that stared as they walked past.

"Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" the redhead apologized, plastering her hand over her chest while she exaggerated beady-eyes at her friend before the three erupted into more giggles.

Valentina sighed, smudging the product into her waterline over the residue of yesterday's makeup with the pads of her fingers before putting the makeup away in her back pocket.

"So, anything happen on your drive-by last night?" Tina winked, smirking at Carol before she earned a pinch on the arm from said redhead.

"No, actually, Tommy's car was parked in the driveway," she responded, leaning back against the unopened lockers with a grin so the blonde could reopen hers.

"Wow, shocker, the boy was home on a Sunday night?" the brunette gasped, looking at Valentina who shared her false concern.

"Okay, okay, laugh all you want, but he wasn't answering my calls all day. I had to know if something was going on!" Carol defended herself and her boy-toy, Tommy H.

"He was probably busy rubbing one out to the message you left on his machine."

"Ew, God, I do not need that image," Val groaned, pulling out her astronomy textbooks for first period. The black cover was decorated with a large image of Saturn, bold words exposing the topic of the textbook at the top.

"You're just jealous you're not getting any," Carol bragged, glancing down curiously at the books in her friend's hands. "Dude, why are you taking astronomy?"

The blonde glanced up from her books, not quite making eye contact with her two friends who awaited her answer.

Neither of them knew about the hopes and dreams Valentina had as a kid, or about her current dream to sit amongst the stars. No one did.
