The small cafe that Namjoon takes you to is quite a lovely place.
It is a bit late in the day for you to have lunch, so he offers to order some dessert and a refreshing glass of iced tea for you once you are seated, while he orders himself a plate of sandwich and coffee. He had specifically chosen a quieter spot to sit, making sure that you would be able to feel comfortable speaking to him in private without worrying about other people listening in.
Especially when you both know that you are going to be emotional once you begin talking.
He had seen it firsthand, after all, as during the drive from your workplace, you have had your tears building up more than once. One of which happened when the radio started playing the old song which you danced to during your school prom night with Namjoon as your partner.
Having the memory flooding back to you made you start bawling like a baby. It would have made you feel embarrassed if only you had been with someone else instead of Namjoon. But he made you feel safe enough to allow yourself to be vulnerable in front of him. Instead of teasing you about it, Namjoon had only reached out to comfort you, holding your hand through it all while making you laugh as he started singing along with a voice that was partly out of tune, and the tears that came afterwards had come out again but only for a completely different reason.
These damn hormones, you curse at yourself as you think about how unstable your emotions have been lately, even if you know that you would be missing these vulnerable moments once the babies are born and you would return—hopefully—to your old self.
An awkward silence has fallen between you since the moment Namjoon took the chair right across from you at the table. The only sound you can hear is the tinkle of ice inside your glass as you stir your drink with its straw, using it to distract yourself from looking into his eyes that seem to be piercing through you.
Namjoon sips his coffee slowly, patiently waiting until you are done gathering your thoughts.
Once he notices that you are no longer looking distressed, Namjoon leans forward. Resting his elbows on the table between you, he clears his throat, gently breaking the silence between you.
"Did you come by at the house the other day?" he asks.
You can already tell that he is smiling even before you lift your gaze to look at him. Bracing yourself, you finally look up to meet his eyes. The moment you get to see his smile again, the emptiness you have been feeling in your chest starts to fill up with warmth.
"I found the cake," he continues. "You're the only one who knows how much I love those fudge brownies, and where to find the one that I'd prefer the most."
Taking a sharp inhale of breath, you nod to answer, "Oh, right. Yeah, I stopped by."
Namjoon grabs your hand before you can start looking away again. "Why didn't you say anything? Why did you just leave it behind?"
